Sullia: 'Made Made Snana' Takes Place Amidst Controversy

Sullia, Nov 29: The ‘Made Made Snana’ ritual took place amid much controversy during the ‘Jathrothsava’ of Subrahmanyeshwara Temple, near here, on Monday November 28. More than 600 devotees performed the ritual.

Following several complaints and objections submitted to the government, it had issued an order to the temple committee banning the ritual. The temple management committee had directed the devotees not to perform the ritual. A press release was also issued by the temple committee in this regard.

Protesting against the government order, the Malekudiya families insisted that they would not make the ‘Ratha’ if they are not allowed to perform Made Made Snana. Puttur assistant commissioner and manager of the temple Sunder Bhat later held a discussion with the Malekudiyas. Later, when the temple manager discussed the matter with the deputy commissioner Dr Chenappa Gowda he was told to proceed with the ritual like every year. Coming to know of the withdrawal of the order by the DC, the devotees expressed their happiness and shouted slogans in favor of the deity.

Earlier, there was a rumour that Brahmins will not be served food outside the temple. This is because Made Made Snana can be performed only if Brahmins are served food outside the premises of the temple.

Knowing this, devotees urged the temple management to make arrangements to serve food as usual. Later the devotees telephoned minister of Mujrai department Dr V S Acharya and requested him not to stop Made Snana all of a sudden.

The message was then passed on to the DC and he was told to take a timely decision.  Later, the temple management said that it does not want to hurt the feelings of the devotees and the ritual will be continued. After ‘Asta Mangala Prashna’, a solution will be found and action will be taken depending on that.

When Daijiworld contacted DC on his cell twice to know whether the decision is temporary or if the ritual will continue next year, the call was not answered.

    Mr. Varadharaj,
Do you know the real meaning of democracy. To follow the religion of one's own wish and to resepct others religion is democracy.. You cant force some to do or not to do any act ... It is his legal as well as moral right to follow the rituals followed in his religion..

    Dear Madam Lydia
Devadasi or the child mariage were the rituals were not followed by one's own wish. Is was forcefully made to follow by the then men dominated society.. The present ritual is the self intersted one. No one can force anyone to follow the rituals. The person following the rituals is not harming the society. If your medical science is in such a way to cure any one the diseases no one would have believed the god. Please compare the devadasi system with the prayer which we are offering to the god

Dr. S. Kamath is right, it's just making ourselves humble in front of God. God loves those who are humble at heart. Even Velankani church, in front of Mother Mary many people Neeldown n walk for more than a K. M. Even though their legs are bleeding they don't stop. To fulfill their intentions often people make promises "Harake" n once their intentions are fulfilled they have to keep their promises at any cost.

According to My Belief Made Snana is a kind of religious practice which can Mitigate the effect of I Consciousness or Ego .Ego is the root cause of all problems including some of the Psychosomatic diseases .Itching of the skin without any cause can also be due to psychic factors .Hence If people do this with utter surrender to God Subramanya it will have a benificial effect .If done just like a Dumb ritual or Blind Belife it will have no effect .At the same time if one can surrender to God with a simple Udhanda Namaskar then there is no need of Made Snana at all .These are all devised by our Ancestors to destroy the Ahankara or Supre Ego within us

With all due respect for the religion and the Kukke Subramanya God, The ritual is if not healing then it is not going to cause any skin disease or affect the human body by rolling over a vegetarian food left out on the banana leaves. The Banana leaves might have healing ingredients when exposed to heat of the hot food served on them to the people who ate it. The issue should be why only adults Brahmins ate on it why not the other caste? Why not you serve them to infants? And then devotes which may have less negative impact to the viewers. The people who comment negative only because ,here two things which are pinpointing, One is who ate that food and another one is why the Brahmins advice the devotees to roll on these leaves used by the them. There are so many leaves at the temple every day and why not have a made made snana now and then?.I really pity the people who do not understand the logic behind this.

JAIMINI P.B. I do agree with you.
Let them roll over the floor, not
on the food waste, which is too
    humiliating. This is might be
    centuries old religious tradition,
and even today some can't chang the
    deep rooted religious tradition.

I do remember, half a century back,
some gullible Christians thought that it was divine blessing to eat the food waste of the Priests,
and I do remember my father warning in front of
the Priests to take the waste to
the trash for dog and cat. Now
nobody shows any interest for that
    divine blessings through waste
    consumption.

It would have been greater, if the
    Brahmins also will participate in
the waste rolling act after eating
    the delicious food!

It is the religious belief of common person for having fulfilled wishes by God. Why to bring caste here. Even Brahmins participate in it. If any one has problem don't go there and practice it.No one is forcing anyone. If anyone cant see close eyes. In this 21 st century Media,Education technology so developed that a common person can understand what to follow or not. No one is pushing there to roll on leftover stuffs. It is self decision taken by person. Don't heart other religious feelings by ing caste as politician do.

"Faith can move mountains", You can make people to do whatever you want by persuading belief in them. If you don't have faith in doctor who treats you then your healing is doubtful.Education is very important to make aware people what is wrong and what is right. Hindu temples are very old and they are rich heritage of our culture and customs.

This type of rituals are descended from generation to generation. If you find peace and solution to your problem by performing this kind of poojas I don't think there is anything wrong in it.Criticizing someones religion is not good for our society. It has been said "don,t disturb someones religion and don't leave your religion".

There is most of confussion in the news itself published by many media. The 'made made snana' is performed not only by lower castes, but by all castes people including upper castes. It is perfomed by people who had an 'harke' or some 'sorts of prayings'. It is performed with intentions of invoking blessing from Lord Subrahmanya & not as a sort of slavery. If you closely look at the bottom left person in the last photograph above, you can have the clear picture (person with kattcha & juttu).

Moreover narrow minded people have been commenting here with intention to hurt the majority community. Narrow minded people better go to Subrahmanya yourself & observe the invent closely, & you may be shocked to find your own religion men offering prayers.

No body should question the beliefs of devotees of any religion. Nor we have the right to criticize. Some week points are there in every religion n that's acceptable if it's not harming others religious practices. Without seeing air we believe in air just by feeling it.
Son of God coming to this world n dying on wood is written in Purana's. But Jesus second n last coming is to judge the world, just to separate the good n evil people.

Many of my Christian brothers have not read the whole Holy Bible even once. Before preaching others we need to know our own religion. Many of us don't know how many chapters are there in new Testament(27) n how many in old testament(46) ? Total 73..

    Albert,

Can you quote reference of the Purana in which it is written about the coming of a son of God to die on a cross ? Also, was there a mention of St. Thomas coming to India too ?

Don't you sound a bit like an Evangelist ? Are we not happy living together harmoniously despite being a Hindu, a Christian or a Muslim ? Aren't we proud to have a constitution that permits us rightful practice of our own religion ? Please don't say something that will disgrace our constitution. Faith has equal value in the eyes of the Almighty no matter the name is Ram, Allah or Jesus.

However, do not try to print your preaching on a placard and stand in a public place in UAE, you will not live to see year 2012. My request is keep to your faith inside your house or heart, do not take the religious liberty of India for granted. You should have realized this after living in a country that you are in.

Inspite of education, peoples thinking has not changed. It will take another 100 or 200 years for this to happen. Most are still steeped in their medieval traditions and customs. Jesus Christ died on the cross more than 2000 years back and by shedding his blood saved mankind from eternal damnation. Prior to Jesus’ coming, about 5000 BC, the Rishis or Sages had written on palm leaves in the Vedas that the son of God would save mankind by dying on the cross.

But how many people may I ask have read the Vedas to verify this. Jesus Christ second coming to earth is going to happen soon. The world is in turmoil and this is sufficient evidence. 2012 will be worse than the previous years. I request my esteemed readers to please check www. thewarningsecondcoming.com for information on His second coming.

    Naina,

I understand your religious feelings but if we, the educated human beings, do not call for a change, our society will be functioning on two extremes. If Swami Dayanand Saraswati had not preached against child marriage, we would have today had no opportunity to study and type this message. Our life partner would have been decided right at the time we were in the cradle. System of 'Deva-Dasi' or 'Sati' would not have abolished.

I am sure you are educated enough to apply for a medical therapy than perform these superstitions to cure illness. Then, why not use your qualification to educate illiterate people ? Remember, this has nothing to do with the ritual of worship - Puja of a deity will continue despite of giving up this custom.

If at all Govt policies since independence were proper, these illeterate and poor (lower caste) would not have remained poor/illeterate. Had these people been literate they would not have come forward to do this. SO again it is the Govt policies sisnce independence which failed miserably in eradicating casteism, poverty and illeteracy. If this ritual serves the purpose of few people then dont stop it.Now people are educated,so concerned people should provide the insight into this ritual and after knowing the sanctity of it let the people practice. What way people show reverance to God is left to individuals. when their acts are not harming anybody then why hinder them to practice.

With due respect, methods of worship our great mother India has within her bosom are of diversity. Some call the supernatural Brahma, some Allah, some God. This topic is not against a method of worship but about spread equality and social dignity. Do you think social organizations calling to stop this practice are anti-hindu ?

Please accept my apologies if any of my messages offended you but the call is for treating human beings equally - not subject to his birth history or positioning him at some spot of a measuring scale for no fault of his. I agree with Valson Mendonsa, Mangalore/USA .This is very dirty. Please don't do this. You all are embarrassing us. Temple is to pray. It's God's house. don't misuse the premises with all this. Also think of the hygiene factor.
