Mangalore: School convener's advise to girls evokes ire, parents file complaint

Mangalore, Jan 10: The parents of three girl students of a school here got their children transferred, apparently after the school convener advised the students not to go to dance practice outside the school as it was not safe for them. The parents even went to the extent of filing a complaint against the school.

The incident was reported at Bertrand Russell High School at Baikampady here.

School convener Nisha Laxmi is said to be strict about rules and discipline among students, often advising students about their manners and behaviour. However, eight of the students invited her displeasure after they started going for dance practice in preparation for a youth programme outside the school, after class hours. When Nisha came to know about it, she called them to her office and advised them against going to any dance practice outside when such a facility was provided in the school itself.

However, the way she reportedly advised did not go well with the students or their parents. Three of the eight students complained to their parents who came marched into her office on Friday January 10 and expressed their discontent at the convener's advise to their children.

The parents claimed that Nisha had used 'abusive language' while speaking to the students about the dangers of going to dance classes outside the school and allegedly harassed them mentally by talking of issues related to sex and sexual harassment.

"The convener told us not to go to dance classes for practice and used bad language against us. Every day she calls us to her office room and harasses us mentally. She told us that we should not go to such dance classes as girls get 'misused' there. Hence we have decided not to continue in this school anymore and take private tuitions and write exams," said the three students in the presence of their parents, before walking out.

However, school convener Nisha rubbished the allegations and said that though it was true that she had advised the students, her words were taken wrongly and misunderstood. "These days incidents of crimes against minor girls have increased, and given this situation, I advised them not to go to dance practice that goes on till late in the night. There is no point in thinking that everybody is good and then regretting not taking enough precautions after something goes wrong. Hence, to make the students understand these things, I advised them. However, if they want to take my advise wrongly and take transfer certificate from this school, I cannot do anything," she said.

The parents lodged a complaint against the school with Panambur police as well as the women and children welfare committee, stating that it was not right on the school convener's part to talk about sex with the students and control their activities after school hours when parents were there to take responsibility of their children.

The school management too filed a counter case against the parents.

Sources said that more students may leave the school in the coming days over this issue.

I strongly believe that parents are the one who play the main role in every child's life.. The school authority just can't stop going any child to any classes such dance or singing classes, because if parents knows when n where the child goes that is good enough..so i think in this matter school authorities should not interfere..

"all is well dat ends well" Hey guys those girls are back in d same school where they were tortured (todya's the Hindu). Pl pity those who cried foul against school convener. It Seems to be a conspiracy against nisha laxmi. Could any student ever agree to continue in a school where they have been continuously tortured? Does this episode not look like the handiwork of a dance school where they used to stay back till late night? Don't "jump before the guns"!!!!

Mr. Dancer I appreciate your sentiments towards fellow dancers. But you should also try to understand the feelings of a responsible school teacher. If at all she did any crime by abusing her students can dancers vitiate the school atmosphere by vandalizing it . Pl see the above photos. If you don't find your fellow dancers in the photos i agree with you

Hi All...thanks for your thoughts. I have few Questions:-)
1)The convener's advice was not to go late night practice. ( Girls practice till 8)so does this means girls are not safe in our district. School trips also children participate and come late night. The school day ends after 10 pm..so should parents not allow children for these events. Teachers will take care ha?? Y u feel the dance class is not responsible...they also treat their students as their own and are responsible to them safely.
2)Convener told not to go dance class when school is giving same facility. Has school let them participate or trained them well to perform and win..but dance classes do...coz they have that ability.
3)If that girl is not going to dance class and was playing somewhere or attended a latenite function wth friends and if something had happened would that convener taken the blame??no she would have blamed the parents coz they are responsible for sending her...then y she has a problem wen these children are going to dance class which is more safer coz u hav ur group members wth u to take care.
4)School can advise which is good for children, but they cannot stop them from children's interest(dance, sports, cultural activities) which may be the greatest strength in the future - u never know.
5)School should be supporting and encouraging children to participate in such activities which will showcase their talent and build a them as a strong performer.
6)Parents are the first teacher for every child and they know how to build their child's future. If we speak about trust and sex we have seen cases where teachers also have involved in these type of harassment also...and there are many cases filed...so please dont judge anyone by their profession or community...judge them by their ethics...there are good ppl and bad ppl...u cant stop living coz of that..I am a dancer and i know my responsibility..this is an insult for all dancers who perform in late night shows wth girls..All dancers pls support.

And who ever telling that they need a teacher like ms.Nisha, who look after her students as her own children, for ur kind info we dont want such kinda mother who speaks in such cheap language and use abusive language to scold little 8th standard students. I totally disagree with the school correspondent . What right does she have to go against children's rights .k she would have punished if the children were performing in school time or else without knowing the parents, but in this case parents know and with parents permission and after school these kids were going to the dance class then what right does that correspondent have to punish them . The correspondent should be punished for using abusive words with those children and torturing those little kids . The educational board should take serious action against that correspondent.

The convener has done the right thing, since the matter was about the safety of the girl children going to late night dance practices...which was even "unaware by the parents!"
the main culprit is the dance school, for taking girl children for late night practice.
i hope the children and their parents will realize their mistake someday.

School authority doesn't have any rights after school hours unless it is a residential school. Students might go out after school hours with parents or guardians, friends and also they can take part in extra curricular activities like dancing, singing sports, etc. all these responsibilities will be taken by their parents and guardians of the students. In this case does correspondents send their students officially to that reputed folk dance group..??? Is there any agreement between the dance group and school .??? Did students come and take part in that dance group in school hours.??? Did parents complain about the dance group to the school .??? Did students share their view with school teachers saying that we dont like that dance group .???

For all these questions the answer is absolutely '' NO '' So this correspondence doesn't have any rights to say that students should not join that reputed folk dance group . Of course, this dance group is registered and this group has been working for past 15 years and rewarded by govt authorities and this group has given many performances nationally and internationally as per my knowledge.

I pity these parents and their failure to weigh and understand Nisha laxman and school authority's concerns and their advice to the students.I studied in this school and pass this school everyday as i live in same neighborhood.est 20 years ago This school's students, mostly come from fishermen's community and was about to get shut down couple of years ago due to lack of response and competition from new schools around the locality. That is when i heard from my uncle(my cousin is a student as well)that a new administration took over and there was a great turn around not only in terms of strength but also with respect to disciple and student engagement process by the administration.

I even attended the school day function recently along my cousin and was really happy with the entire event (except for politicians being on the guest list) which i can understand that the administrators need their support to get the school back on track.I am very saddened by this incident and the noise around this because someone like Nisha Laxman and the team tried to avoid cases such as the one in Delhi and the rest of the country and this is how we support it????? People, I see comments such as sachin wouldn't ve been Sachin, if not for after hours activities at school but remember that ajit tendulkar always accompanied him :).The issue here is of a security and precaution and knowing the locality and with events what we hear everyday in our country we really need enlighten the parents about the intention and accountability.

Does anyone know about what's happening on that school . Does anyone have any idea about the dance class which they are talking about it is a respective folk dance academy not a simple film o western dance class, anyone who are supporting the school correspondence do they know whatever happening over that school if u want to know just come to that school arrange a parents meeting with all the parents and with all the ptt members and then take a decision and after listening to all the parents then support whoever you wanted to becouse u cant just say anything sitting from wherever you are , come into this school and get to know what is happening in this school .

When any teacher use dat kinda cheap abusive words on your own children you come to know what kinda stress those parents were facing . And som ptt president MOHINI who commented over here, but when that incident had happened, why is was not in that place she might have come and handle that situation instead of discussing in the comment box . And one more thing dat correspondat would have informed the parents right instead of scolding those children n telling abusive words, but why didn't she do that, why did she punish those kids why does she put those kids out of the classes and scold them

I only wish and pray we have more of Ms Nisha Laxmi's in our Schools who will care for their students with the care of a mother. Parents don't believe all that your children report to you. Take it with a pinch of salt, take time to find out the truth and show yourself as educated, well mannered parents who are truly interested in the all round development of your children. As far as i know her, she is too strict but there's a reason behind her strict actions And because of her strictness most of the students may hate her as I did but they vl realize once they leave the school. . But these kind of hatred is common Between every student and lecturers these things should have understood by the parents before taking actions. .
Here the girls should be the main culprits because they may have added some extra fittings with their parents so that they take action against the convener & Remove her from the school. .

Asper my view Ms Nisha Laxmi is absolutly correct. She acted as a responsible school convenor as well as parent. Any thing happen to their children, then they blame the school.

From a Parent’s point of view, we as Parent’s and students should abide by the school rules, Does school discipline extend outside the school gates? Generally, NO, but in certain circumstances it can, because of safety issue and because of unwanted cases like Rape, kidnapping and missing complains happening everyday in Mangalore. All practicable steps must be taken to ensure that no harm occurs to students due to the action or inaction of school staff. As Parents we should not harm the student’s relationships with teachers or other students. Good work, Thank you Nisha Laxmi for being strict about rules and discipline among students.

My full heart support to Ms Nisha Laxmi. All the violence taking place today in Mangalore is the result of no values on living style. Even Animals behave in orderly way as meant to be. But today youngsters lost the moral values. Sad news. Thanks to Nisha Laxmi for your contribution to youngsters and teenagers.

When advise is given in good faith, it should not be construed as malice. If anything does go wrong, the same parents will come to the school to complain about the authorities doing nothing.

THIS SHOWS HOW PARENTS SUPPORT EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES TAKING RISK OF UNTOWARDS INCIDENTS HAPPENING DAILY AND LEAST BOTHERED ABOUT PERFORMENCE IN STUDIES.
LET THE PARENTS GO FOR FULL TIME DANCE SCHOOLS IF THEY NOT SATISFIED WITH THE SCHOOL PRACTICE AND BOTHERED ABOUT THEIR EDUCATION.

It is the responsibility of not only parents, but also the teachers and school authorities to guide the students on the right path.

Otherwisr, a few students can spoil the entire school atmosphere.

Mrs.Nisha Laxmi has done right in advising the students about the bad effects of dance classes outside the school especially when it is done in late hours.

The parents would have blamed the school authorities for not advising the students if some thing had gone wrong.

Parents should understand the teacher - student [Guru -Shishya tradition] relationship in the context of our scriptures and should not intefer unnecessarily in this relationship.

We don't want to learn guru-shishya tradition from a parent like you.you should support the children instead ur discouraging them. For eg: if Sachin Tendulkar was not allowed to go out he wouldn't have achieved such name and fame. And ur Nisha is trying to stop such activities. If you want to know more go to that school and check out what had happened.

If you carefully read the news, the dance practice was in connection with a youth programme. I do not think the principle would have objected if the girls were going for regular dance classes that form the art or folklore of our culture. Being aware of the present day situation in our twin district where teenage girls are abducted, go missing, led astray etc. the principle would have taken this stand. Today the parents are objecting just because the principle was strict. Tomorrow god forbid, some untoward incident happens, these very parents would come crying that they were unaware of such classes and claim responsibility of the school. Children have a penchant for adding Mirch masala when they are at fault.

We do not know who is right and who is wrong. If you do not want your child to be disciplined, do not send them to school, do home teaching. When you are in school, you have to follow the school norms strictly. Even the Child artists in films have to take permission from their respective schools, to act in films as it would affect their curriculum, attendance, etc. They are permitted on the ground that they make up the studies privately and are on par with other students. They do not get any special concessions just because they are child artists. I feel instead of going independently, the students could have sought permission from school via their parents, for participating in such dance events.

I am the PTA president of bertrand russell high school baikampady. My son is studying in class X in this school. What had happened on friday in the school premises is condemnable. No one has the right to enter the school premises and attack the correspondent of the school - that too a lady - in the full glare of media, police and the students. This is a criminal act. All of us should protest against such crime. Two or three parents have no right to hold the school for ransom.

    1. Considering the atmosphere prevailing around M'lore, the teacher has a valid point.
    2. If any untoward had happened ,what would the parents have done?
    3. Dancing is important may be, but
    studies more. If dancing classes
are provided in the school why go outside?
4.Do not know what transpired by way of words etc-but the matter could have been solved amicably
by calling the parents for discussions first.
    5. Why exodus from the school for
    this issue?
Looks like no one is matured here....

Discipline in the school is most important. The Convener has the right to advise the students and the students should adhere to rules and regulations of the school. If they wanted to leave the school, dear convener let them move out and don't convince them to stay. I am impressed of the strict rules of the school teacher. Laxmi. It is imperative for maturing School girls required considerable advise from the school teachers and from the parents. If the parents need modern life style let them go to Muthalik. He will teach them dance as well as modern life-styled stone age dance.
