Mangaluru, Aug 18: Chaos prevailed at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Deralakatte here on Monday August 17, after a youth suffering from a kidney ailment passed away and an angry mob allegedly assaulted two doctors and two nurses claiming that their negligence had resulted in the youth's death. The group also alleged that doctors raised a hand at the youth's parents.

Mohammed Faizal (24), a resident of Beeri in Kotekar, had left to Gulf eight months ago, but as he started suffering from a kidney ailment, he returned to his hometown about four months ago. He got admitted to Yenepoya hospital where he was advised to undergo dialysis. Accordingly, he was regularly undergoing dialysis from sometime.

However, Faizal's condition suddenly deteriorated on Monday evening and Dr Roshan who examined him asked the youth's family to arrange blood, and during course of the evening, his relatives donated four units of blood. However, by 9 pm his condition worsened and he breathed his last. His parents were informed about his death over the phone.

Faizal's parents rushed to the ICU of the hospital, but Dr Roshan was not available. His assistant Dr Prashant reportedly told them that they could get information about their son soon after Dr Roshan was back. It is alleged that though the parents insisted on seeing their son, they were not allowed to do so.

As news spread, Faizal's relatives and locals gathered at the hospital and expressed anger at the doctors and not only assaulted the doctors and the nursing staff but also damaged the hospital property, it is alleged. The group also claimed that the doctors had raised a hand at the deceased youth's parents.

A tense situation prevailed at the hospital. Ullal police arrived at the spot and dispersed the mob. Two persons were taken into custody, it is said.

Meanwhile, the doctors at the hospital said that Faizal was undergoing dialysis regularly but on Monday evening his condition deteriorated. Four units of blood were then obtained from his relatives, out of which two units were transfused, while two went unused. "In such cases, blood has to be transfused within a certain time, because of which two units were left unused, but the relatives of the patient misunderstood it," they said.

The patient suffered from a condition called chronic Kidney disease , he also suffered from acute Pancreatitis and septicemia. He has been explained that he has 90% mortality risk in a year, The patient party has signed all the informed consent on the case sheet. He was on dialysis since 1 year through a AV fistula which burst yesterday. The patient was irregular on dialysis and not following his recommended plan of 3 dialysis per week.. Hence was going bad, the patient party who claimed had no money , was given financial support from the hospital. For the last two days he has been advised that requires urgent dialysis and ICU care but his mother was violently protesting against this idea. He was prepared for urgent dialysis through a femoral catheter , but before it could begin he developed complications in the dialysis room and was shifted to the ICU , the patient party refused to allow him to be shifted to the ICU , when the duty Specialist doctor was doing his work the party hindered shifting to the ICU and hence the doctor shifted him to the ICU in the best interest of patient. The patient party who got angry because he was shifted to the ICU , they were violent and CCTV footage has showed all clear evidence how they jeopardized other critically ill people in the ICU and also assaulted two doctors and 1 nurse. Unfortunately the hardworking keenly interested doctor simply suffered for doing his work in best interest of the patient. The resident doctor actually pays a hefty fees and works 18 hours a day for 7 days a week and sees about 50 patients under him . The hospital management chickened out on this whole issue because of ulterior motives. The hospital is a medical college hospital which runs on minimal basic charges with no benefit to the resident doctor nor professor. They work on a fixed salary. We the resident doctors are extremely unhappy, sad and disappointed about the uncultured attitude of these people who receive treatment out of our own money and be

I'm not saying I could have helped the young man who died. There's too little information to deduce why he had kidney failure, let alone why or where he started bleeding from. But 90% of dialysis in older adults is caused by only 2 diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure. In 2002 I published how to reverse early-stage kidney disease in these 2 diseases. In theory, then, 90% of kidney failure is already preventable, although probably not this unfortunate young man's. But the waiting list for a kidney transplant will surely get shorter if there are 90% fewer people waiting for a kidney.

What Mr. Rudolf Rodrigues, Mumbai said is absolutely correct.

"they can only induce FEAR so you budge".

Recently one of our relatives who was 72 years old was critically ill, took to a good hospital in Kerala and one doctor personally known to us said, instead of wasting money by the lakhs through
unnecessary treatment and testing let she die peacefully here.

But some other doctors played the tricky fear inducing technique, so she was moved to another hospital of the same corporations did many unnecessary testing and treatment, and she died within one week.

Did the hospital do that service free of charge? No, now the hospital industry is turning as the highway legal robbery, truly very sad to see this predicament of the society, the pure greed game playing with human lives.

In some hospitals, if we reach the doorsteps for simply cold, if we are rich, they will order a battery of tests, the tests will be negative but our pockets also will be getting empty. It seems like, now the doctors are afraid with an unstable amnesia disorder to identify even minor diseases to please the investors and to keep the modern very high priced testing
instruments busy to get the maximum return out of the investment. Besides to pay back their huge educational expenditure. Great good Samaritans of the 1st century!

I am a specialist doctor working as a staff in the same hospital belonging to the same community. I would like to add a note that this particular group of people from thiss region are trouble makers. Yesterday there was no fault of the doctor who was earnestly helpin the patient to be saved and the mother and Uncle where violently protesting why did u shift him to ICU , he would have died with us. Its a sorry state of the college and hospitals where doctors themselves are at risk of their life. The health minister seems more interested in getting pictures taken.

@Oswald lobo, mangalore,Please dont give comments and blame on medical Team.I ask one Thing why should whole mob who has nothing to do with the Patient, not knowing anything about the Patient should gather and shout and destroy the Hospital Inventor?when patients relatives have questions ok,it is another catogery.but so many People who are they why are they there ?who knows about kidney ailments, dialysis?and Problems?Police should be immediately called and Action should be taken when such case arises. They are Trouble makers to all including relatives.Hospital should have taken blood according to the Needs. Now two bottles are a waste very costbar good it is.This public never learns. In future should Hospital summon Police when a Patient dies in Hospital?or have a Team allround the clock ?whatever the cause doctor knows and he will answer to relatives. So please dont make Problems in front of Hospital or make other patients to get afraid.May his Soul rest in peace.

Two days back U T Khader warned Doctors in stead of culprits who assaulted the Doctors.

Under the protection of such political bosses and appeasement, anti-social elements are having free hand in Ullal and DK.

It is natural for any one to rise hand when the relatives of the patient use abusive language.

I pray to the Lord to save D K by destroying these anti-social elements and their political masters.

this is not a correct way of dealing with doctors. if this trend continue then hospital/doctors may not admit some patient into their hospital unless/until the patient/party submitted the affidavit. this is not a good sign.

No doctor would wish his/her patient should not be recovered from illness. But the problem is that the hospitals have become a business. No doctor cares for his patient.

One example I can give you is my father was in ICU for several days. we used to buy medicine daily worth 4,000 - 5,000. The strange thing is that daily they used 1 packet of gloves (50 pairs each). I dont know where these gloves going since we have to buy all the medicines from the hospital itself.

True, I also experienced the same in one of the Udupi Hospital. My dad was admitted and was in ICU. Daily Rs 6000- 7000 towards pharmacy bill. it includes diapers, gloves, injections, syringes etc. God knows how much is being used.i have seen nurses wasting medicines, gloves etc. in the ward. They don't care. anyway at that time we only think about our loved one to get well soon. There is no alternative. It is a total mess in most of the hospitals. No professionalism at all. God save the patients

Doctors do their best to treat and save patience. Rest in God's hands.
Patient was on dialysis for prolonged time but the unruly, uncivilized action taken by the mob is not justified.

They are already practicing highly defensive medicine by putting gullible patients to unnecessary costly tests like MRIs, CT scans, angigraphies etc. to pocket the commission due to increasing greed!! It is no more a noble profession but a money raking one!!

None of these tests are forced on any patients. It is always done with their consent. And if u havr the confidence tht it is for money raking why go through them. U can always refuse at your own risk and sign off. Then when a life is lost at least then you wont blame the docs but yourself.

What do you mean by use of force in the first place, how can they, they can only induce FEAR so you budge?

I meant most of the docs rarely have skills, rather they straight away go for evidence based medicine which is very easy for them but cuts deep holes in the patient's pockets!!

Forget here, even in the US so many reputed docs and hospitals have been charged with sending patients for unnecessary costly tests to milk the insurance cos.!!

Would urge you to read the recently released book by some very ethical and upright docs "Voices of Conscience from the Medical Profession" by Dr. Arun Gadre and Dr. Abhay Shukla to know the underbelly of corporate hospitals!!! Jai Hind!

That means they will take crores from any TDH candidate and issue him a degree and he in turn with his half baked skills will use patients and scapegoats and to further his agenda of fast profits by recommending unnecessary tests without any guilt, this is highly despicable and goes against humanity!!

Have you heard there are strict figures of conversions of OPD patients into admission and certain minimal costly tests (unwarranted) for a doc to survive his job or he is out all this is mentioned in the book I have named above!! It is said that even 25% of our med grads who pass out from pvt. medical colleges will pass USMLE level exam due to degradation of education, so they are planning exit exams for med grads so they are of certain caliber before joining post degree courses or starting practice!!!
