Mangaluru: Respect fellow Indians, practise religion inside home: Chief Imam at inter-faith meet

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JD)

Mangaluru, Jan 9: It was a confluence of spiritual minds at Hotel Ocean Pearl here on Monday January 9, as leaders from different communities gathered for inter-religious intellectual meet on 'Peace, Harmony and National Integration' organised by Rights, Awareness and Knowledge Society (RANKS).

Addressing the meet, Dr Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, chief Imam of All India Imam Organization, a representative body of Imams of mosques across India, said, "It is true that we must practise our religion but it should be within the four walls of our house. When we come out of our house, we should remember that India is our faith and only then will we be able respect our fellow Indian." .

The Imam, renowned for rendering his service towards solving the Palestine-Israel and Arab-Israel crises, further said, "The beauty of India lies in respecting another's religion and celebrating all the festivals with true brotherhood. We must respect each other and only then can we strengthen our country.

"Islam is seen as a religion that supports terrorism globally. But Islam has always advocated peace. We have to keep in mind that some bad people are found in every religion," he added.

Rendering his address in Sanskrit, head of Puttige Math Sugunendrateertha Swamiji said, "The kernel of every religion is peace. Peace is the ultimate goal of life. Every God including Sri Krishna advocated peace. Even our country which was a land of ancient civilisations advocated peace and is among the few countries that have not invaded any other country.

"Every 10 kilometer we have a new language and new food system. The beauty of India lies in celebrating its diversity. Hence each of us loves the person next to us and there is no scope for hatred in this world," he said.

Qazi of Dakshina Kannada Shaikhuna Twaka Ahmed Musliyar said, "When the followers of Prophet Muhammad came to India, the local kings gave them shelter and gave them land to build mosques. Same was mentioned by Arab traveller Ibn-Batuta who pointed out that in Mangaluru, 4,000 Muslims lived under a Qazi and under the shelter of King Rama Dev. Such was the harmony in this place. Hence, Islam in India will always be indebted to the Hindu rulers."

Rendering his address, parish priest of Milagres Church Fr Valerian D'Souza said, "If we see God in our fellow human beings there will be no hatred. If we spread hatred and do not help the one in need, there is no value to the worship we render in our respective places of worship."

Founder of Muslim Rashtriya Manch, a sister concern of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Indresh Kumar said that irrespective of religion, everyone must respect the nation. "All over the world we are recognised from our nationality. It is our duty to safeguard it as we are always indebted to our motherland."

Ramesh Guruji of Agastya Ashram, Kerala also conveyed message of peace and brotherhood.

President of RANKS and former DGP of Kerala police K M Krishnamurthy welcomed the gathering.

That is a truly great and inspiring message from the Imam. I particularly like his suggestion (I am sorry for being ive here) that religion must be kept by everyone within the four walls of their house/apartment as most people do. Most people do not display a cross or statute publicly (a few fanatics excepted). By the same token, Mullas should not broadcast through loudspeakers every morning , noon and evening their call to prayer and their sermon. It disturbs a lot of people's quiet day. Ringing of church bells was stopped voluntarily (?) by Christian churches throughout the world, and the same should be done by mosques. In this modern day people do not need to be called to prayer every six hours 24/7,

    Dear Alwyn - Canada

For your kind information, Islam is a religion of peace. Nowhere Islam supports terrorism. Some Blacksheep are there in the followers of all religions, but it does not mean that we assume that the particular religion supports the terrorism. You can blame only certain evildoers, but not the religion. It is an open fact that certain biased medias are working day and night to tarnish the IMAGE of Islam, it is their fault. By the will of God Almighty Islam is spreading fast worldwide as usual.

Being good citizens of India, let us work for the peace, trust, harmony, friendship and goodwill among the citizens irrespective of caste, creed, colour or religion.

The religious harmony of the nation was skyjacked by the crooked politicians as their spade card to bluff the electorate, the prime example is the current central Government of India. Religious freedom is the fundamental right of every human being, the U.N. charter in which that is clearly written and India has signed in that in 1949.

Even in this century there are countries that ruthlessly persecute minorities or sects of their own religion, denying them their basic right to peacefully practice their religion. Our country is 100 times better as far as religious freedom and toleration is concerned.

In religious tolerance, whether India is getting a better grade or failing grade now? Under this new administration, it began to fail. There is no need of comparison in the religious freedom in a democratic country, that is the no 1 fundamental right.

    Well said Rita

There is no compulsion in the religion (Quran 2:256)

The constitution of India has also given us the right to choose our own faith/religion, hence no compulsion.

This statement of the Imam is really reassuring. The so called district of the "intellectuals" need to have religious leaders like these who can support communal harmony and bring back the lost brotherhood between people of all religions.
