Tiger Chief Prabhakaran Killed - Lanka army Sources

Reuters

Colombo, May 18: The leader of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was shot dead on Monday while trying to flee advancing troops, defence officials said.

Prabhakaran was in a small convoy of a van and ambulance along with several close aides which tried to drive out of the battle zone, but was attacked and killed, the senior defence ministry official said.

"He was killed with two others inside the vehicle. There will be a formal announcement later," the official said on condition he not be named.

"When the troops opened fire, the van tried to get away, but it was also hit," said another high-level source from the military. "The vehicle caught fire."

The defence ministry said the rebels' leadership was decimated, heralding an end to their decades-old battle to carve out an independent ethnic homeland in the north of the island.

Troops also found the bodies of Prabhakaran's 24-year-old son Charles Anthony, the group's political wing leader B. Nadesan, and the head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Peace Secretariat, S Pulideevan.

Also reportedly found dead were the LTTE's police chief Ilango, its eastern leader, S Ramesh, and deputy intelligence chief Kapil Amman.

In a dramatic announcement, the guerrillas acknowledged Sunday that their decades-old battle for an independent ethnic homeland had reached its "bitter end", signalling Asia's longest running civil war was all but over.

The separatist rebels were once one of the world's most feared guerrilla armies, and ran a de facto mini-state spanning a third of the island before the government began a major offensive two years ago.

"We have decided to silence our guns. Our only regrets are for the lives lost and that we could not hold out for longer," Selvarasa Pathmanathan, the Tigers' chief of international relations, said in a statement.

But his appeals for peace talks, rather than a surrender, were flatly rejected by the government, and the defence ministry said soldiers were being sent in to crush the diehard remnants and recapture "every inch of land."

Sri Lanka's hawkish president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, will open a new session of parliament on Tuesday with an address that will officially mark the ending of the war.

The conflict has left more than 70,000 dead from pitched battles, suicide attacks, bomb strikes and assassinations. The LTTE emerged in the 1970s, with all-out war breaking out in the early 1980s.

The capital Colombo, which has been frequently hit by Tiger suicide attacks over the past quarter century, saw street celebrations which lasted well into Sunday night.

Authorities have been determined to capture, kill or recover Prabhakaran's body amid fears his escape may lead to an attempt to rebuild the LTTE and usher in a new cycle of violence.

The Sri Lankan government's moment of triumph has also come at the cost of thousands of innocent lives lost in indiscriminate shelling, according to the United Nations. The UN's rights body now wants a war crimes probe.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, the only neutral organisation that has been allowed to work in the war zone, has for its part described "an unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe."

But Sri Lanka has shrugged off the international pressure. "There was no bloodbath as some people feared," human rights minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told reporters. "Everybody has come out safely and they are being looked after by the government."

LTTE defeated, Sri Lanka free from terror: army chief

Colombo, May 18 (IANS) : Sri Lankan armed forces have "militarily defeated the LTTE and freed the nation from three decades of terror", army chief  Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka said Monday after Tamil Tigers leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was killed in the island's north.

All top leaders had now been killed and the process of identifying the bodies was underway, the Sri Lankan military announced.

Prabhakaran was killed while trying to escape the battlezone in the island's north along with two of his top aides.

Prabhakaran, 54, was in a convoy of a van and an ambulance with Pottu Amman, head of the intelligence wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and Sea Tigers chief Soosai when the military opened fire in an isolated strip of Mullaitivu district.

Prabhakaran's death comes shortly after soldiers stumbled upon the bodies of several key LTTE leaders, including his son Charles Anthony, who headed the group's IT wing and was being groomed to take over his father's mantle.

Mr. Siva, before setting up the slab on my knowledge, there is a deliberate need to enrich your rusted limited knowledge. Just explore the other area also. It is very disgusting to say that now a days your so called civilized government has been adopting double standards with its foreign policies. It has been hyped that India is having a very stable/neutral foreign policies. Just tell me one thing, whenever Israeli tanks rams into the Gaza strip or its fighter jets pounds the cluster bombs on Lebanon territory , It would not take a minute to India to condemn this severe military offensive.

India’s blamed statement comes immediately out from the desk before Israeli fighters could reach back to their base to reload the ammunitions for further Ariel attack. But why India is not condemning the ruthless attack from Hamas or Hezbollah or Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades for firing rockets from behind the civilian localities. These groups are not making their own civilians as human shields? Whether India is afraiding with Arab countries or India is lacking the guts to face the entire Arab world? Whether Arab blood is more precious than Tamil blood? Whether India is thinking that Tamilan blood is also black?

For your information LTTE never abducted or beheaded any foreigners to meet their demands. Tens of thousands relocated tamilians from Europe and Canada are the secondary source for the LTTE fund. These tamilians are highly qualified and professionals. But still they are supporting the separate movement. They know the pains through which they and their families passed through. So just review your knowledge before passing on such comments.

It is the news I was waiting to listen for a long long time now. Finally the LTTE supremo has been killed. Sandeep Mathias from Udupi/Dubai is comparing Prabhakaran to Subhash Chandra Bose, which is nothing but insulting the great Indian hero, who fought the British for making the Indians their slaves. His motive was to kick out the British from our land, who came to India and started to rule. It was the Tamils who went to Srilanka to work as plantation workers and as such, they had to live there peacefully, not to fight for a separate land from a country who adopted them as their citizens. Although Subhash Chandra Bose did choose non-violence, his action did not result in killing of innocents. Unlike Prabhakaran, Bose did not send any Indians to be suicide bombers that killed thousands of innocents. Tamils may have faced discrimination in Srilanka like any minorities that are facing everywhere in the world today but the path he chose is deplorable. LTTE is the most dreaded terrorist organization that killed not only Sinhalese but also Tamils alike.

Prabhakaran was the one who introduced suicide bombing that killed Rajiv Gandhi, who helped him and his people by sending peace-keeping force. Instead of being grateful, he fought the peace-keeping force resulting in more than a thousand peace-keeping personnel losing their lives. Prior to that India sent planes with food supplies when the Srilankan government stopped supplies to the war-torn Tamil areas. So ungrateful he is, he bit the very hand that fed him. Prabhakaran lived to see his son dying albeit a day and he must have felt the pain what thousands of Srilankans and Indians already felt when they lost their beloved sons, brothers, husbands and fathers because of this monster. I would compare him to Saddam Hussain, who too had similar ending after losing his both sons.

I congratulate the Srilankan government, its military and people for wiping out this menace from their land. I hope and pray that the peace will prevail upon their land which was missing for the past three decades.

Sandeep Mathias u better learn the concept properly right, dont misguide people with your half knowledge, there are plenty of informations available on net or otherwise. secondly if you think LTTE is right then Taliban is right, No one does anything without receiving any benifit, if not they are fools if they risk the peoples life and dont desreve to live.

Every country every place there is discremination that means you cannot fight for a seperate country if so what india will be. India may be devided into more than 100 folds. There is a voice may be heard late but not never. One example Indian elections. If only non hindus vote will we get these results? Jai ho. Mera Bharat Mahan

Mr. Sandeep Mathias, Udupi/Dubai, for your information, initially Prabhakaran’s intention was good & was defending the minority Tamil rights. Later when he got the taste of power he became monolithic, ruthless & intolerant rouge. He killed anybody & everybody who contradicted his opinions. Like a typical sadist dictator he single handedly controlled Tamil people in the North East by the rule of AK-47.

He never wanted the progress of the Tamils but his superiority on others hence he killed our beloved PM Sri Rajiv Gandhi. Similarly his suicide brigades killed Sri Lankan president Ranasinghe Premadasa and several Sri Lankan ministers, politicians and other leading personalities in its quarter-century reign of terror. His forces kidnapped minors & recruited them in his dreaded military by force. That is the bitter fact.

Mr.Rajesh, For me he is a great leader and I am not ashamed to say that. If you people assume that he was a ravana/coward then go and wipe out subhash Chandra bose’s name from the Indian history book. Because both of them were involved in the armed struggle for independence.Prabakaran simply didn’t lift up the gun for passion. Angered as a Tamilian by what he saw as discrimination against Tamils in politics, employment and education from the majority Sinhalese. He didn’t fight for his self interest or for his religion that’s made the whole world to recognize LTTE as lone non –jihadi organization. Again I am very much proud to describing him as a great and fearless leader for leading highly disciplined, motivated and dedicated force in the world. Rajesh, one more thing. You must dig out the whole history to digest the fatal facts that it is an Indian Army and Indian intelligence agency that had provided all sorts of training and logistic supports to the LTTE in the initial days. Now it is a time for you to assume who are the cowards?

Those who take the sword will be perished by the sword: Jesus said. Let this be a lesson for everybody who will take the sword and gun to settle disputes. Prabhakaran has shed the blood of thousands of people, killed a great man Sri. Rajeev Gandhi, created millions of refugees who are settled all over the world. Now, the country of Sri. Lanka can rebuild. But the Goverment of Sri. Lanka should''t take revengge upon the Tamilian population, but settle the matters peacefully with help of the international community.

This must be a day dream. I would have liked him to be captured alive to face trial for killing Rajiv Ghandi. The world is getting rid of terrorists. All terrorists must die so that the world is a better place to live for our future generations.

Prabhakaran will be remembered for all wrong reasons. Where had his cyanide capsule disappeared when he was cornered by the Lankan army? Why didn''t he ''fight till the end'' and instead chose to flee like a timid rat, hiding in an ambulance? After all he was just a timid rat, who just liked being called a ''tiger''.

Our beloved soldiers and one Prime Minister lost their lives in this battle. We now look forward same fate also in Jammu and Kashmir region. Already more of finish of Hamas/Taleban. All countries are behind to collapse terrorism. It''s now too late, but taken steps is indeed great.

I don’t thinks it’s a day for the Sri Lankan govt to celebrate. There are "n" prabhakaran to come in future to help Tamil ethnic in future, the reason simply because they are treated like a refuge in the motherland. There the govt needs correction and not by killing thousands of poor Tamilians for the sake of hunting one "Tiger". Perhaps the ground realities are always wrong or diffrent from what we read or watch!!

More than One lakh people were killed during the bloody war. Did LTTE or Prabhakaran get anything from this war.He is the first man to introduce SUICIDE BOMBINGS.Now all the terrorist organisations are following his path. That is the only contribution from LTTE Supremo to the world. He will earn wrath of millions of people all over the world.I read in some article that by 2012 all the evil in the world will come to an end & this is becoming true in Sri lanka and Paksitan (Taliban). Now do u agree that Ravana has been killed ?
