Mangalore : Confidence Building Top Priority of M R Vasudeva

Daijiworld Media Network (FR)

Mangalore,  Jul 15: M R Vasudeva assumed charge as the  Airport Director of Mangalore Airport on July 14, 2010.  Vasudeva has been transferred back to Mangalore from Coimbotore recently as the Airport Director in the level of General Manager.

When daijiworld contacted him to know his priorities on assuming charge at this  crucial juncture,  he stated that his foremost priority would be to undertake confidence building measures.   “The public are unduly worried and I would like to reinforce our commitment to provide all safety  and security measures  in the airport to make it foolproof  as much as possible.  We will also ensure that we meet international civil aviation standards  with the safety of passengers utmost in mind”, emphasized.

He denied the accusation that Mangalore being a table-top airport  the runway is risky for landing.  “The minds of the people are attuned to the oft repeated statements that table-top runways are hazardous,   which is wrong.  When a runway is made,  it is made with a specific dimension whether it is on a hill top or on a plain ground and aircraft has to land there within that specific dimension.  The pilot has to land the plane in that particular strip and  all pilots are trained for that”, he asserted.

He also assured that airport would  take necessary safety measures to get rid of all undue worries in public mind.  He said sand arresters will be provided at the end of the runway as part of the safety measure. Vasudeva pointed out that there has been an increase in the  number of passengers flying from Mangalore,  as compared to last year.  The number of passengers who travelled from Mangalore was  56,000 in June 2009,  where  as by June 2010 it rose to 63,000,  which signifies that  there has been  an increase in the passengers who fly.

Without giving a specific date Vasudeva said that the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) will be thrown open to passenger traffic within the next 8 to 10 days.  He will also have to oversee the all important task of extending the runway from  the present 8,000 feet to 9,000 feet,  to include a larger spillover area as part of the safety measure.  The  decision to extend the runway was taken by the Civil Aviation Ministry after the Air India Express crash that killed 158 lives in May this year.

With the much approachable and people-savvy Vasudeva as the Airport Director there is every possibility that the Mangalore International Airport will be able to win back the confidence of the people  in the days to come.

I heard during a conversation that Air India has a policy that does not allow pilots to "go around" or attempt for a second time as it badly reflects on the pilot's performance. He is supposed to make a perfect landing the first time itself. Considering that the life and safety of passengers is more important than such airline policy, can someone shed light on this myth ?

Mr Vasudev has built a great image and reputation for himself and gained the confidence of all he has come in contact with. Any one was free to go to him with a legitimate suggestion or request and could be sure of a good hearing as he believed in SERVICE WITH A SMILE.

I have had the pleasure of meeting this dynamic stalwart several times and observed that he had time for every one and everything and that is the definition of a BUSY MAN . He more than proves that A BUSY MAN HAS TIME FOR EVERY ONE AND EVERY PROBLEM.

It is my sincere hope that Mr. Vasudev has come to stay this time and not get relocated.

A WARM AND HEARTY WELCOME TO YOU MR. VASUDEV.

Welcome back to Shri M.R. Vasudeva, the personality always looking for developments at Mangalore Airport.

As suggested by experts, World Class safety improvements are please be implemented by Aviation Ministry & Air Port Authority of India at Mangalore Airport.

AIR FARE HIKE by Air India Express for Kuwait and other GCC / Mangalore sectors during the peak Seasons cannot be afforded by thousands of low earning Karntaka NRIs in Kuwait and other GCC countries. Air India Express management can please be suggested to reduce the ticket fare to Kuwait / Mangalore sector and other GCC sectors during peak seasons to a considerable level.

Permitting other budget airlines like Jet Airways, King Fisher to operate to M'Lore/GCC sectors, and granting landing permission to some foreign airlines like Air Arabia etc. will help a lot to thousands of Karnataka NRIs in GCC Countries.

    Dear M R Vasudeva,
Welcome to Mangalore City your home town… It gives me immense pleasure to write to you. Everybody believes u can make written words not to stay there but make things into actions… I have taken some points which I need you have a second look.
    1. Present table run way needs to expand 9000 feet may with enough land to be extended in all directions in case of emergency and human error for a safe landing.
    2. We need other private airlines to fly to mlore airport “AS SO CALLED BUDGET AIRLINES” provide the least service and have the maximum fair at any given time. Which I believe they are making use of the opportunity which is not a fare competition.
    3. The new roads which are under construction leading to airport needs to improve the safety features as they wait another tragedy to happen.
    4. We believe we need to give chance to international airlines to operate from Gulf countries as it will lead to growth of mlore airport which could generate income to airport and bring tourist & overall development as mlore can turn into a tourist destination.
    5. I would be appreciated if we have direct flights from the GCC states which presently do not have direct access to mlore airport. Specially Saudi.

Welcome Back to Sir M.R. Vasudeva, the humble and dedicated Airport Director.

For the kind attention of Aviation Ministry and the Airport Authority of India:

Kindly note that for the Improvements of Safety and Security of Mangalore Airport, the Karnataka NRIs in Middle East Countries would like to place before you the suggestions given by highly experienced Aviation Security & Safety experts’ for the following UPGRADATIONS of Mangalore airport, to be executed on a TOP PRIORITY BASIS.

Details of the Work to be carried out:

    1. Implement comprehensive Safety measures, through best industry experts, within a specified time limit for the safe landing of aircrafts at Bajpe airport.
    2. Since runway is surrounded by deep terrains, increase the runway length by 3000 to 4000 feet more, so that the total runway length could be a comfortable 11000 to 12000 feet.
    3. Increase the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) by 300 meters in accordance as per the standard recommendations of International Federation of Airline Pilot Associations and Int’l Commercial Aviation Organization (ICAO), a standard that USA and Austria have incorporated into their runway safety guidelines.
    4. Increase the Width of the runway to 300 meters, i.e. 150 meters each side from the center point of the runway in accordance with the recommendation by ICAO.
    5. Arrange ‘RUNWAY ARRESSTOR SYSTEM” that is designed to safely stop an overrunning commercial airliner. Such arrestor system includes various kinds of pits, energy absorbing barriers and something called an engineered material arresting system (EMAS) that consist of cellular cement blocks placed at the end of a runway that are designed to slow an airplane and stop its forward motion.
    6. Train and carry out mock “Disaster Management Drills” – carry volunteers in a plane and create a scenario of over shooting the runway and airlift or rescue the people within the specified time (90 seconds), so that the cabin crew and the resque teams will be well trained in rescue missions.
    7. Install Approach Radar that can inform controllers whether an aircraft is on the correct glide path for landing. Improve (ILS) instrument landing system, approach lights, touchdown lights, runway end lights for identification and install QINETIQ Radars to identify (F.O.D.) foreign object debris at night.
    8. Fire Fighting equipments/ human skills/ ambulances near to the airport and arrange for the broad approach tar roads to and surrounding areas of the airport.
    9. Though Flight Safety has always been a concern of the Airline Companies, the management of AIR INDIA EXPRESS has to ensure the operational capability of their flights by conserving human and material resources through prevention of aircraft accidents.”
    10. Not to use mobile phones in the flights.

    Dear Sir,

We Mangaloreans eagerly look forward to operation of the New Terminal. At present situation, if two aircrafts are to leave at one time, there is not enough seats for passengers in the waiting area after checking-in which is very embarrassing.

However, is there a possibility of bringing an end to the domination of AIE ? Can the terms and conditions be relaxed so that other airlines take interest in operating from Mangalore ? I know certain matters are outside your jurisdiction but, can you understand the difficulties we Mangaloreans face ?

Welcome back to the architecht of the new mangalore airport and runway. To win the confidence of the passengers, the extension of the runway is very important and thus make other airlines to fly to mangalore. Being budget airline we dont expect any confort from the Air India Express, but at least enough leg space so that the passenger travelling for 4 hours will not become patient when he reaches to Mangalore.(At least the Mangalore Mumbai laxury busses have more leg space than air India express seats)Because of this the people are travelling via Bangalore or Mumbai.

    Mr. Vasudevas statements:
    1. Table top runways are not risky for landing and take offs is not true according to aviation experts and pilots.
    2. Plans to erect sand barriers and larger spillover area is crucial for safety.
the very fact that it is planned to implement these measures now to increase the safety means it was ignored before after the new runway was built, probably because there is hardly any space left on both ends of the runway.
If it was done before the runway was given free for air trafic probably it could have averted or atleast reduced the severity of the recent accident reducing or eliminating the loss of life isnt it?
At least now do everything possible to avoid further accidents.
