Udupi, Oct 4: Our's is a democracy of Kumbhakarans ruled by politicians who wake us up once in five years to remind us to cast votes, said senior Gandhian H S Doraiswamy.
He was speaking at the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at the MGM College organised by Gandhian Study Centre on Saturday October 2. We pride ourselves for being government of the people, by the people and for the prople, but in reality people have no say and are just puppets of the elected representatives.
Stating that it is shameless for the people's representatives decide on salary hike for the service rendered by them, he said infact they should introspect on the extent of service rendered to the people and also their contribution to the development of the nation. It is ironical that the freedom that we gained by struggles of leaders such as Gandhiji to work towards development and bring economic stability to the nation has turned out to be unfruitful with unequal distribution of wealth rendering the poor, poorer. It is time to implement the ideals of Gandhiji for overall development of the nation, he observed.
Nandan Prabhu, professor, MIM delivered a lecture on the occasion. BVT managing trustee K M Udupa, MGM principal Dr Venkatramana Gowda and MGM Pre-uiversity College principal Soumya Latha were present. Dr N Hala Naik welcomed and Dr H S Shivaswamy proposed the vote of thanks. Kokkarne Surendranath Shetty compered the programme.
