Apart from the helmet, I very strongly feel that it could be due to the road being too narrow. I have seen it for myself when I annually travel by bus from my cousin's place to Fermai (Gurpur) from Modankalp by bus enroute to Polali and Neermarga) etc. It is very dizzying and scary due to the altitude of geographical locations of such places also due to the fact that the bus drivers drive at break neck speed as if in a grand prix tournament and don't care for its passengers sitting in the bus. Imagine buses coming / going on the opposite sides have to veer towards extreme left or extreme right depending on the expanse of the road coupled with the direction the traffic flows. You can very well gauge how it must have been the case with Hema and her husband Purandara Acharya. The main reason being two wheeler's are Light Commercial Vehicles which do not have grip on road conditions unlike the heavier 4 / 6 wheeler's. Nothing has changed all these years and I wonder why people of Mangalore are very lazy and slack to voice their objection to the Municipal Corporation and press them to accede to their demand in increasing the road width on either sides to make travel more comfortable. I certainly wouldn't recommend any two wheeler's using such dangerous roads ... they might as well take the public transport and travel more comfortably. But if it is something urgent like in the case of Hema, one would have to take a big risk ... Our Indian tendency unfortunately is ... no amount of road safety awareness through jingles or media adverts or through road shows / skits etc. all these are taken very lightly and NEVER seriously. It is all the chaltha hai chalatha hai attitude that puts an individual in the lurch.

RIP Mrs.Hema. 2 wheeler riders are considered as unprotected road users. Other protected road users like 4,6 wheelers have to give maximum respect to them while on road. But before that 2 wheel riders must respect their own lives. Please wear helmets (including pillion).

anybody could confirm if she was wearing helmet or not. I am sure she was not. People think it's a great thing not to follow traffic rules. traffic rules are made for our own safety. It's not that it will save us 100 %. but 1 $ chance was there also u know we are alive. so this 1 % plays a drastic play on our life.

Sadly this death becomes a statistic - but does not serve to change the hearts of people on road safety issues.

We believe that accidents happen to other people not us. We do not heed to helmet rules for pillion riders made by the government. If others die - we tend to attribute it to fate and not due to negligence to follow road safety.

We are appalled when there is an air crash. Yet we fail to realize that every year several thousand people die in road accidents.

We are very tolerant of Bus drivers' rash driving.

It is high time we realize that 2 wheeler riding is a high risk to our lives. Once we agree on that we do not need government to tell us to take precaution. We will do with our own volition. It is only when people do not understand the risk of injury they RISK they own lives.

To ensure 100 percent compliance within 6 months: 1st offence should incur Rs 500 and next offence, the DL should be suspended for 3 months.
This penalty is much lighter than the death penalty on roads!!

A unfortunate accident. Bike collided with a bus coming from the opposite direction in which Hema gat killed and her husband Purandara Acharya was injured. Now adays, we hear many bike accidents. Many have been killed and several injured. There are several reasons for this. RIP.
