Mangaluru: Vehicle inspection at Nanthoor results in serial accident, protest erupts

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Chaos erupted near Nanthoor circle here late night on Monday April 1 after police's attempt to stop a bike resulted in a serial accident.

It is learnt that the cops manning the Nanthoor junction tried to stop a bike going towards Pumpwell for inspection. The rider was allegedly speeding, and in a bid to avoid hitting the cops he veered to the side.

At the same time, a car that was behind the bike also veered off and rammed into the bike. Another vehicle that was behind the car was also damaged as a result.

Eyewitnesses said that people involved in the accident sustained injuries, but the cops on duty left the spot without admitting them to hospital.

A large crowd gathered at the spot and began a flash protest against the traffic police for frequently stopping vehicles late night for inspection. They alleged that the vehicles are stopped in the middle of the road resulting in accidents.

Four persons suffered minor injuries in the accident and have been admitted to hospital.

    I will tell you being a regular on Mangalore roads... Police are doing their work. But when ever they try to stop any vehicle, especially a 2 wheeler, the drivers act smart and escape from the venue. Many a times they will succeed because police will not be prepared and these 2 wheelerists run away as if they have done a major victory. Also there will be none who will support police stopping such reckless drivers, instead I have seen many a times people around laugh at police for missing those creatures.
    When your day is not your's and you try to escape like that, you will end up with accidents, either falling down or hitting dividers or hitting other vehicles... no need to blame police. When police stop you, please slow down and stop, nothing will happen.

    The Traffic Management and enforcing the law in case of Violation is the Right of the Traffic Police Authorities.

    However there are established procedures to stop the Vehicles who Violate the Law. Vehicles CANNOT BE Stopped at the Junction. It will definitively Traffic Hazard and potential for accident to happen.
    The Police officers first determine whether it is safe to stop a vehicle without causing Traffic Jam or Hazard . They can always take Reg. Number of offending vehicle and issue Penalties later from records at Traffic Reg.office.
    A humble request to Commissioner of Police and Citizens of Mangalore to jointly plan a long Traffic Discipline Program for Drivers in DK. It is one of the worst in India specially Bus Drivers. So many lives are lost by irresponsible, reckless driving and We hope the discipline of driving will improve simultaneously with City Development

    One thing do not understand why police has to stand at circle for vehicle inspection or catching, this is dangerous circle ,no one is having patience to wait a second at the signal , if signal is violated then police have every right to stop any vehicle not for routine checks.

    2 wheelers are seen driving reckless now a days .
    Need to keep distance between vechile. Near nanthoor circle evryone is in a hurry ...There so respect in driving
    Nanthoor circle so many advices are given to install speed breakers but still no authorities bothered .
    Signal is failure on this circle due to signal change relay timmings .
    Most of the vechile drivers know nanthoor there sre policies .so why do you speed up ??
    Most vechiles know this circle is a dangeroues then why shouldnt be vigilant.
    Policies can stand a bit forward & stop vechiles . One police can stand near the junction & inform the other police who is standing little forward who were is not following rules

    public of mangagala ooru is the worst when it comes to protesting and taking action for causes that disrupt normal civilian life.
    I have travelled to almost many parts of our country and even in our own state of Karnataka but when it comes to spontaneous unity against the public administration, Mangas remain far behind.
    If I am lying, Just observe the election campaign of Mandya on television. All the two wheeler riders are not wearing helmet and the only people wearing helmets are the police!!
    In Mangalore, we citizens, respect the police, more than required.
