Dhoni Blames IPL Parties for T20 World Cup Exit

ST LUCIA, May 12 (PTI): India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni refused to blame the IPL for the team's Twenty20 World Cup debacle but conceded that after-match parties and hectic travelling during the glitzy league did take a toll on the players' fitness.

"Most of the players were fit and fresh. Players also need to be smart, not only about cricket but about other things going around in the IPL. We have to respect your body and give some time for it to recover because there is more to it than playing matches. Attending parties and travelling takes a toll," Dhoni said after India's five-wicket loss against Sri Lanka on Tuesday that knocked them out of the event.

The defeat was also India's third successive in the Super Eights stage, a disappointing low for the inaugural champions.

Dhoni said the six-week-long IPL was in itself not responsible for the debacle.

"Our performance does not have anything to do with IPL," said Dhoni.

"I wouldn't say the IPL was a set back for our preparation. In fact, it has helped us in match preparation for the World Cup. It has thrown up players like (Suresh) Raina, Rohit (Sharma), (Pragyan) Ohja and (Amit) Mishra. It has groomed a lot of talent."

Dhoni rejected criticism of the team and said he is least affected by what is said about it.

"As Far as the sloganeering goes, I am not bothered about that. We try and do our best. We play for our country and we are more respectful to our country than those who do these sort of things. They can do whatever they want to," fumed Dhoni.

He said Indian had done their best although the results have not been too good.

"Whenever we go out there we try to do well. But you won't do well every time. We tried our best and did whatever we could have, but we still ended up being on the losing side," said a despondent Dhoni.

The wicketkeeper-batsman commended the Sri Lankans for their all-round show yesterday.

"They batted really well in the end overs. Also, they bowled very well after the 13th over and made it difficult for us to score.

"They were looking to bowl yorkers and to keep the ball outside off stump. You can't do much when someone bowls perfect yorkers. Me and Raina were out there in the middle. It was really tough. But we were looking to slog everything thing," he said.

Dhoni said he did not regret batting first on Tuesday. "I don't really regret batting first. If we had chased 150 batting second, it would not have been less than 10 runs an over which is tough. Defending 163 was difficult. We fell short by a few runs. Had we scored 180 or more, the target would have been 160-170 and that would have been a good target to defend," said Dhoni.

Dhoni said this was the best Twenty20 side that India could field.

"We are not performing to our potential. I can't say why. But at the end of the day this is the best T20 side we have. It gets tough without players like Virender (Sehwag), Zaheer Khan (he suffered a blow on the right thumb) and Praveen Kumar," he said.

Asked if the Indians' vulnerability to the rising ball proved to be their downfall, Dhoni said, "I can't comment on that as you really can't stretch a tournament for too long. It required a bit of adaptation as we have played in similar conditions quite often. I can't say the wicket was such and we didn't perform well."

He said Indian batsmen had technical problem when it came to playing the short ball.

"Most of us have the problem of playing short pitched balls. So it is not just the youngsters who had problems. We can't neglect it any more. But we don't have bowlers who consistently at 145-50 kph and most of wickets in India don't have that kind of bounce," he said.

"But we should also remember we are good players of spin. So we shouldn't be ashamed that we can't play short-pitch bowling. We have to play even against short-pitch but we can't be ducking and leaving all the time in Twenty20," he added.

On whether he was feeling the pressure of captaincy, Dhoni said, "You are always under pressure when you play for India. It is part and parcel of the game. I have not played any game till now when there is no pressure."

Notwithstanding the debacle in the World Cup, Dhoni said he had faith in his side.

"I have a side with lot of potential to do well, wherever we play. We had two or three poor tournaments. But other than that we have been consistent," said Dhoni.

Dear Readers till yesterday Mr. Dhoni was a icon and all of a sudden he became unwanted.
Winners have many fathers and loosers are like orphans. This hour Mr. Dhoni & his team requires support. That doesnot mean I am accepting his blame game. There might be more than the blame gaem which only the concerned authorities will understand his language including the coach and ors.
Unfortunately our team lacks application of mind to the situation. Better they watch, analyse, evaluate how Australian and England team are playing. When they won the matches I had supported them and during this hour my good wishes are with them.

look like 99% comentators dnt know about history of indian criket..
in history of cricket indian players wer never comfortable agaist any pace seaming attack with speed above 150 km/h from 3 to 4 bowlers in juicy bouncy pitches..
it may greats like gavaskar, manjrekar, ravi shstri ,azaruddin or vengserkar..or ganguly or present day dhonis man..even sachin also struggled agaisnt good pace attack of macrgath or amrose -walsh..

so dnt blame individual , its our cricket system which failed to produce qulatiy batsman agaisnt pace attack..
if same deadly 300 batting pitches continues in india , we are never going to win any series in fast tracks..
you can chage dhoni or raina or uttappa or rahul or azar or kapil..but definetly result will not change..this is fact.

We have to appreciate Dhoni for bringing Indian cricket to this level. But blaming only cricketers is of no use. We have to kick the BCCI persons like Rajiv shukla, sharad pawar Niranjan,N srinvisan and others who make cricket schedule was hectic and have good money to their pockets from TV rights and others. Also first thing they should throw Yuvraj out. The way he is playing cricket is like he is doing a big favour for indians.
The problem is with us indians in case if they had won T20 people might have forgotten god and started praying to these players. Please enjoy cricket but don't make these players as God. At the end whoever it is Dhoni or anybody they are only worried about money. Public go to hell we have made our money through IPL etc.

Dhoni stop giving reasons of IPL hangover. In fact, Indian team had most experienced players than any other team, yet they played without any discipline, lack of love for the country where millions of fans awaited late night in support of the team to win & bring back the cup. At least our women's team who have no support at all have reached the semi-finals of T20 Women’s World Cup because they are playing for the country. Best wishes to the women’s team for the semi-finals & finals. We wish them to win the T20 World Cup, which will be slap in the face for Dhoni & gang, who are running after IPL money. When they are playing IPL, there is no excuse, despite so many matches played in tight schedule at different venues with hot humid summer. There was no comments from any players till then, despite injuries because millions of rupees was filling their pockets. Secondly, not only players but the ors should also be equally blamed for sending a B grade team for a World cup, when so many young star players were in full form in the IPL matches. If we do not groom these youngsters, we do not stand any chance for the coming World Cup, and we won’t be surprised that even the Afghanistan team will beat us one day. We have to take an example of Australian players, despite playing so many matches, they are always performing, never out of form or exhausted. Wake up ors… & Dhoni and stop giving reasons don't brin disgrace to the millions of fans.

Greetings to all Indian cricket fan’s, I guess BCCI should first rest players like M.S.Dhoni, Jadeja & Murali …for their poor performance, I was listening to one of his post match interviews after they had made it to the IPL finals “Our franchisee have invested so much money on us as a team we should return them with wins and blah blah….” If the same thought is given while playing for the nation would be well said n done….so I guess Dhoni should stop commenting on other batsmen and work less on making more money on Advertisements.

this team was one of the best any country can have.the moment we lose we have comments from every one, we fire captain full change in team, coach, manager etc.we all know what exactly was the problem with our players in this tour. i believe we don't need so many changes just change the pitches in india , we dont want run festival .i am sure india will produce good fast bowlers as well as batsman who can face any kind of bouncy track. if you have to be champion you must know how to adjust yourself in different condition.Hope BCCI brings in new rules in regards to standard of pitches for domestic as well int'l games.

The biggest culprit for Team India losing the last 6 Super Eight Matches is IPL. On both the occasions IPL ended just a week before the T20 World Cup and on both occassion Sehwag is out bcz of injuires playing for DD, Yuvraj totally exhasuted with late night parties and has no strength to hit the ball out of the ground. Zaheer has no fuel left after IPL were fuel gone god only knows, Dhonis master mind is still with Chennai Super Kings, as he stated, how much money his franchisee is spending on them, so it is his responsibility to take Chennai to Semi Finals, Team India later, so of course WHY HE WILL BOTHER. Yusuf Pathan is a local hero and International Zero. Another IPL hero and zero in WC is Murali Vijay. Dinesh Karthik is a pure show off, Nehra running on field is a comedy, Harbhajan is no more a match winner. Gambhirs form is gone. OVERALL a total Pathetic performance by so called IPL Heroes and Team India Zeroes. JUST let them play the IPL and LET BCCI FOCUS on another building TEAM INDIA. Srilankan players who participated in IPL matches, seem to have benefited more in experience and techniques, than the Indian players. Most of the leading Srilankan players, such as Sangakara, Jayawardane, Malinga, Angelo Mathews played in the IPL. This may be one reason Mr. Dhoni could not blame hectic IPL tournament. Rather he had to blame the Indian players enjoying late night parties and too much traveling during the tournament. Even the Srilankan players played and traveled as much as the Indian players if not more. Still, how could they perform in the World cup and Indians could not? Should we assume that Srilankans are more stronger and capable than Indians?

The main reason for their poor performances
in the T20 world cup in the year 2009 &
this year happens because of hectic IPL series.
So, either IPL should be banned or IPL schedule
should be curtailed to just 15 days only.
Then only we can expect something from Team India
in the next T20 World Cup like 2007.
Nothing impossible, wait till next time, all is well.........

If the Indian team had tried hard and lost none of us would take it to heart. However, the body language and the entire approach showed a thoroughly unprofessional attitude. The fielding was of KG std. They did not even make an effort to practice against the short ball and were busy with other activities like swimming, volleyball etc. before an all important match. The players, with the exception of Raina, clearly lacked pride in playing for the country. Lack of accountability and nobody to question their attitude. The IPL has given even mediocre players riches beyond their wildest dreams. They complain of tiredness - when most of them have not even made 10 runs per innings and bowled only a maximum of 4 overs per match. However, they did not complain of tiredness when they were pocketing the moolah. The Indians can take a leaf out of the performance of the Australians. They have been playing non-stop cricket for more than 10 months at a stretch yet they play with pride & passion. Against B' Desh & Sri Lanka they turned in match winning performances after being 5 down for virtually nothing -when the chips were down. Henceforth their contract payments should be made strictly based on performance with at least 50 % based on the individual & team results - you will see a marked turnaround in the performances. Also politicians like Sharad Pawar etc. should be strictly kept away from sports in India. A strong pool of players needed to keep the so called stars on their toes.

Its a game, losing and winning is most common. We cant expect India winning every time. as like we assume, other country fans also support their team, they played their best and result wasn't India's favor. Cheer up guys, we are number 1 in Test Cricket and Number 2 in 50:50.

Hey doni don't talk bull shit... it's not pressure..It’s because of money all player made from IPL .... I would suggest all cricket body including IPL don't encourage players with huge amount of money..Just pay normal salary..This is cricket and sport, playing 100% cricket for the country is first and show good results and make public watch worthwhile. they way Indian team played in this T 20 world cup as if they have no couch or direction ... look at yesterdays match, the way gowtha ghabir runinglooks like any gully player or village player will run better than him... I blame it's totally team and individual..they got no love for the country or team spirit ..Look at srilanka and their 1000% commitment for their counrys team and Indian 1000% in IPL just because of money or fame.... i suggest don't count any players who are not contributing for the time being..... Its shame for india and Indians who watch their bad game.... at least a good fight... they are fit for play test and one day match...
modi should be banned watching cricket also….. IPL should pay a nominal feed like ranji match to all players except foreign players….. if they want to include.. rest of the money should be spent for good cricketing ground in each district and sport education development in each state…. And not for players like 20-30 making crores….. it’s a joke

India winning the inaugural Twenty20 was nothing short of miracle. It had nothing to do with Dhoni. His honeymoon is over. Right from the beginning he was not captain material at all. But he had lady luck with him for about year and half. Once luck deserted him, all have seen his captaincy. Add to it his arrogance. Then his own inability to counter good pace and bounce.

You have a complete pack of reckelss captain who was glorified to the hilt. On this very forum, I had commented on similar lines almost one and half year ago when team India's performance started dipping. Why Sehwag is not playing? This is because Dhoni is alergic to seniors. His attitude is clear that he does not want anyone senior to him in the team.

If selectors have the guts, leave Dhoni out from the team and hand over captaincy to someone else. You know what I mean. The only reason Dhoni is persisted with is because of captaincy. The day he loses his captaincy, he will be out of the team also since he has hardly any substantial performance on tracks which really matter. Only Sachin, Dravid and Laxman can hanle pace with bounce on any pitches. Then we have Gambhir to certain extent.

Leave Sehwag aside because he is a precious and unique talent and he can and has performed all over the world. Rest all can bat brilliantly on flat tracks wherever they are. But the moment ball swings and bounces consistently, these guys are in soup.Til they learn to handle pace and bounce, they will fail almost every match.

Team India's body language was pathetic and energy level was low. Everybody knows that the ors are mafia people and the players on influence and not by talent and this was proved right again. As all agreed here the team India should have full of IPL heros like Uthapa, Manish Pandey, Ohja like guys instead of Yuvraj and co. whose only physical presence is there. I am really sad for people who wasted their time by by watching matches. We Indians watch cricket as a challenge and revenge, but our players think that they are there only to play (not to win). Atleast people will learn now not to glorify these cricketers.

A very bad performance by Indian Team. In all three matches at the Super Eight stage, nothing went right for Indians. On bouncy pitches, spinners were preferred instead of playing Vinay Kumar. Against SriLanka, when Raina got out, Rohit Sharma should have been sent to bat, instead out of form players came and went back in succession. As some have commented wrong ion of players who were out of form. Being an Indian, highly disappointed! The story will repeat in next year's world cup as well.

India made a good start as Gambhir and Raina were batting. the momentum changed from the moment Dhoni came in to bat as a 'pinch hitter' and was taking only singles.!!! Once he was out, Yuvraj came to bat, who has been out form (Why Dhoni still depend on him..?) before IPL 2010.!! Yousuf Pathan should have come in at No. 3 to try his hard hitting shots as they HAD to win yesterday's match..!!!! Very sad exit for India....

T20 format due to IPL has reached such a extent that, the players will now play more for franchisee instead of representing country. This is going the same way like the English Football league where the players perform for the clubs where they get more money and when it comes to play for country they are out of form. Yuvraj needs to play more domestic cricket and he should earn his place in the squad. Dhoni is labelled as the lucky captain or it was said whatever he touches turn to gold, but this is all rubbish. For T20 you should have all the combination right, seeing the present scenario indian team was more relying on batsman rather than going for all round player and by this your are bound to lose.

    INDIA..OUT OF WORLD CUP !
    REASONS :
1.Poor ion (Piyush Chawla himself had surprise when ed,Whereas Prgyan Ojha got shock )
2.Only Two Fast Bowlers: In a Bouncy,Fast track Dhoni included 6 spinners and only 2 Fast bolwers in Barbados Pitch.Very Funny method
3.Vinay Kumar sitting on the Bench: Karnataka's Vinay Kumar was given chance in the last match in the non bouncy track where he bowled wonderfully. He bowled like an experienced bowler where as Zaheer Khan was pathetic.Vinay should have been included from the start.
4.No daring to Yuvraj Singh who was half fit and out of form.
5.TOSS ION:Dhoni failed desparately here. He wanted to chase against mighty Aust & Windies.India have poor record of chasing & winning against Aust in ODI or T20.
6.Fielding placement poor:Viewers who saw Ind-Sl match must agree with me about fielding &Bowling changes. Catch was taken at slip, immediately slip was removed for no reason ! Dislhan survived.Vinay kumar took wicket in his first over and denied bowling till 9th over !
Totally Poor ion,Poor Captaincy,Poor fielding cost India T-20 World Cup.

What ever you are getting outside the cricket field is what you deserve playing for India ( Ads etc).Atleast perform well when you guys are at tournaments like this. It is good to be civilised in commenting or criticising someone or a team, especially the cricket team of India.  they are human beings & not machines to win each & every tournament they play.Let us remember that even machines fail after a certain stage .

More than anything else, let us first analyse ourselves about what positive contribution we have made for our country or for others before we criticiise someone else & assess whether we have the right to do so & if convinced, then only should we proceed with making silly stupid , horrendous & idiotic comments that we get to see on this forum on every piece of news item that we get to read.

IPL became a money-spinning machine for Lalit Modi, BCCI & franchisees with players enjoying the loot. The Indian team selection was bad, & Dhoni's boys could not win even a single match in Super 8. Good & agile fielders cum batsmen like Saurav Tiwari, Virat Kohli, Robin Uthappa were not included while mediocre & useless people were chosen.

It is time we chose a proper, capable cricket team & change even the selectors. Srikkanth should go. Even Yuvaraj Singh should be asked to perform rather than only act in TV commercials to make money. I strongly feel Indian cricket team needs at least a six-month rest, when they should practice & perform before ion. This or some other drastic solution alone can improve Indian Cricket.
