Kolar: Employees vandalise iPhone manufacturing plant over salary dues

Kolar, Dec 12 (IANS): An iPhone manufacturing plant run by Taiwanise tech giant Wistron Corporation at Narsapura was vandalised on Saturday by employees allegedly over salary dues, the police said.

The iPhone plant established on 43 acres at Narasapura industrial area in Kolar is around 60 km from Bengaluru. Wistron was allocated 43 acres at Narasapura from the state government after it proposed to invest around Rs 2,900 crore and assurance to give employment to over 10,000 people.

The Narasapura facility is being used to manufacture Apple's smartphone iPhoneSE, Internet of Things (IOT) products and biotech devices.

A majority of the nearly 2,000 employees, who were exiting the facility after completing their night-shift, went on a rampage destroying furniture, assembly units and even attempted to set fire to vehicles.

Senior police officers along with additional personnel from Kolar district have rushed to the spot.

In the videos that were shot by a few fellow employees during the arson, those leading the mobs were seen breaking glass panes and doors, turning cars upside down and attacking the offices of senior executives.

Wistron is yet to comment on the violence while police sources said that the employee unrest was over salary remittances to them.

wow..iphone factory in kolar!....Port is in Mangalore but such prestigious industries in some remote hinterland villages. Why cant elected people get such reknowned factories to Mangalore instead of demanding for trivial issues like renaming of roads, airports??

Today I saw India Today news:
SAMSUNG is planning to shift their Manufacturing Base from China to India (Noida)(approx. 4,850 Crores Investment), which is really a good news.
But, if they experience Vandalisation, Strike etc, they may think hundred times to shift their base to India.

IMHO, Apple will just hold the contractor responsible for this, unprecedented, incident as such a massive action of rage would not have happened without any genuine reason!
Other contractors need to be careful so that such kind of incidents are not repeated! Toyota Kirloskar too is facing labor problems since some time!

Great advertisement for companies who want to invest in Karnataka. Big companies will recover one way or other but these idiots will loose their jobs and livelihood . Meanwhile BJP will blame the conspiracy by China and Pakistan.

This should be solved on Top priority if India has to be a manufacturing destination as Govt projects itself .. MAKE in INDIA .. etc etc ..
Many a times .. to satisfy local politicians ( Kolar in this case ) as part of lucrative hand outs .(SO CALLED SHARE ) ....labour contracts .. canteen contracts .. ground excavation etc etc are given based on “ZERO QUALIFICATIONS “ .. ONLY MUSCLE POWER ..
So the well connected labour contractor possibly took money from the company and denied the workers dues..
The said multinational company is very unlikely to indulge in such acts having invested substantially..

Thats why manufacturing companies prefer China !!!!. None of these problems will be there in a communist dictatorial government. Cheap labour and no unrest , no labour unions etc, etc .

For India it will take more years to become self sufficient in spare parts. All of a sudden Chinese components stop means very difficult to run the industry. Same problem may face many other industries also. This problem may be in India only it seems, because most of the countries are in good relations with China. They have stopped only Tik Talk. Heard days a head.

Employees went on a rampage with the iPhone manufacturing plant due to salary dues. But that was not the right thing. But now the employees will be in big trouble as they have damaged the company property, vehicles and what not. The said company will recover the loss through some means and also some employees will lose their jobs and spend some time in jail. Nowadays, time is bad due to poor economy.

These are fools...now the company will go in even big trouble which will result in no pay only. Or the company might go to court and sue all who vandalised the property which will make them pay the company from their hands... Either way looks like all will get unemoloyed

I disagree, the company should have taken care of the employees in the first place, salary is required for some people just to survive. They could have gone legal way though, but in India this system doesn't work because of corruption,

Adarsh what you say is correct, the employees have to be paid regularly, also there is a saying- Justice delayed is Justice denied. There should be speedy disposal of cases, preferably anonymously, like income tax dept. Not more than 3 hearings per side and everything in writing. No taarik pe taarik. At the same time damaging property is also not correct.
