Moodbidri: Ambulance operator Anil Mendonca covers 2700 km in just 41 hrs to shift labourer in coma

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (MS)

Moodbidri, Sep 17: Public is widely appreciating the dare devil act of ambulance owner cum driver Anil Rueben Mendonca of Moodbidri, who took a labourer of Uttar Pradesh in coma after he fell from the roof top of a arecanut godown, to Moradabad which is at a distance of 2700 km from the city within 41 hours.

Mehendi Hassan is a labourer from Uttar Pradesh, who used to work at the arecanut godown centre at Moodbidri. During work, he fell down accidentally from the roof and went into coma. As per the suggestion of his accomplices from Uttar Pradesh, the owner of the godown arranged flight ticket to take the labourer to Uttar Pradesh. However, the airlines refused to take the labourer without doctor and nurse accompanying the patient.

The owner of the arecanut godown requested Airavat ambulance owner-cum-driver Anil Mendonca to help. Without doctor and nurse, equipped with only the oxygen cylinder and discharge certificate given by the hospital plus letter from the police station, Anil took one more driver Ashwath along with him and started from Moodbidri on the evening of September 10 to Moradabad.

One of the escorts of patient Hassan knew driving. It also helped. Except filling diesel, Anil did not stop the ambulance anywhere else and reached Shreya Neuro centre at Moradabad on September 12 at 10.30 am.

Dr Ajay Jain, neurologist was surprised to see Anil carrying the coma patient in ambulance without a doctor and nurse and appreciated his daring and said, “You are great.”

Anil Mendonca returned back to Moodbidri on September 15. All the cost of transportation was borne by the kind-hearted owner of the arecanut godown. Anil also said that injured Hassan is recovering.

The driver has done a great job; but with such advanced medical facilities being available locally, the patient should have been stabilized before shifting him to such a far off place as this type of transporting a comatose patient, without even a trained paramedic along, was fraught with high risks and IMHO goes against medical protocol; don't understand which doctor gave the permission for this; could be, he has remarked as "discharged against medical advise"!!

All our lives we give scant regard to safety, when we insist on scaffolding, net or at least tying safety rope around person working at heights people as well as labourers laugh it off as well as make fun, either we are ignorant, not knowledgeble about safety or we love jugaad. Some even chew off plastic coating of electric wires with plug in or seal electric wire joints with paper tape & work in damp places. In native place forest contractors ask innocent worker to cut trees under HT line with branches touching them.

First appreciate ambulance owner cum driver Anil Rueben Mendonca of Moodbidri, who took a labourer of Uttar Pradesh in coma. It is highly risky to carry patient without a doctor or at least nurse. How the police given clearance. The owner of the arecanut godown requested want save money by not arranging doctor or nurse, and ambulance equipped with only the oxygen cylinder and discharge certificate given by the hospital plus letter from the police station. This is the plight of the labourer and their rights as they working without any labour insurance and even basic amnesties.

It is a great thought by the owner to shift Hassan to his own home where his subconscious recovery will be aided by the touch ans sound of his loved ones... Commendable job by Anil... These instances give us assurance that human empathy is still existent...
