Puttur, Sep 17: After the high court ordered the eviction of illegal shops in Daarandakukku, the zilla panchayat has now come forward to construct a bus shelter in the same spot. The construction of the bus shelter is under process at present.
It is said that the site is an accidental zone.
In spite of opposition from locals, the department has done survey work on Puttur-Uppinangady road in Chikkamudnooru village in Daarandakukku. The PDW department has levelled the site.
It is said that Daarandakukku is identified as an accident zone and has a long curve in the area. According to the public, several accidents took place on the spot due to illegal shops on the roadside. In this regard, after the public filed a Public Interest Litigation to the court, the shops were evicted from the spot later.
Unfortunately, a bus shelter is now being constructed in front of a house gate by the zilla panchayat.
Opposition from public
There is a provision to construct a bus shelter at another place in Daarandakukku. The bus shelter is being constructed in spite of public opposition in the accidental zone.
The bus shelter was cleared while the road was being widened into two lanes. The public had approached Bannur Panchayat for the construction of a bus shelter.
MLA Sanjeeva Mantandoor claims that funds have been reserved for the construction of a bus shelter on the demand of students and the public of Daarandakukku. “The officials have been directed to complete survey work and start construction of a bus shelter. There is an objection from a few people against the construction of a bus shelter. This has come to our notice. We will look into it,” he said.
The survey department has identified the land in spite of opposition from the public in Daarandakukku. The gram panchayat members and officials were present during the survey. But, the general public is questioning who will be responsible in case of further accidents in the area.
