Mumbai, April 23 (IANS) Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray will Monday meet the family members of Tabrez Sayekar, who was killed in police firing on protesters opposing the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district this week, party officials said.
According to a party official, Thackeray will meet and console the family members of Tabrez in Sakhri-Nate village.
Later, Thackeray, whose party is a strong opponent of the 9,900-MW nuclear plant project, will address local media persons at the government guest house there.
In a related development, Ratnagiri district administration and police will begin hearing on externment (removal from district) proceedings against seven prominent anti-Jaitapur activists Monday.
The seven are Bhikhaji Waghdare, Prashant Manjrekar, Shivprasad Budhe, Nandkumar Raut, Sanjay Sakharkar, Suhas Gavankar, Pravin Gavankar - all prominent activists belonging to various political groups or NGOS in the region.
According to Pravin Gavankar, the hearing for externment will be held in the presence of the Ratnagiri sub-divisional officer Ajit Pawar, the officer who reportedly ordered last Monday's police firing in Sakhri-Nate village in which Sayekar was killed and two others were injured.
"They have charged us with various sections pertaining to creating hindrance in government work, stopping public servants from doing their duties, etc. We will defend ourselves against these accusations," he said.
Last week, the state government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the firing and the circumstances leading to the police action on the protesters in Jaitapur and Sakhri-Nate coastal fishing village.
