Asking mobile number for bill payments is against rules: IT department

Daijiworld Media Network – Hyderabad (EP)

Hyderabad, Sep 27: “Asking mobile numbers while paying bills at shopping malls and shops is against rules,” the IT department has warned.

“They obtain our mobile numbers and give them to the call centre. As the mobile numbers reach cyber thieves, several people lose money in lacs,” a consumer had complained with IT officials.

As personal details are getting sold like goods, customers are facing severe problems. “The Decathlon staff had urged that a personal mobile number is mandatory to pay bills,” said Vijay Gopal, a resident of Tarnaka, who purchased items at Decathlon situated at Malakapete.

The IT department has reacted that such information is sensitive and is against information technology regulations.

Some of the stores in India have their own built-up rules which is not constitutional. India should come up with a Law so that every organization follow the data privacy policy while doing business. It should be uniform law and should be standardized. Even in some of the best hospitals and shopping malls in India, management have their own way of working. You question them why do you need certain information, they don't have any answer and simply put the blame on management. Jai Hind.

Data privacy is not taken seriously in India. A lot of customers going to shopoing malls think giving out personal info is no big deal at all. But it is. And it is also absolutely NOT NECESSARY to give out personal info unless one wants to. So the best thing to do next time anyone is asked to share ones personal detail, jist ask them to get the store manager. As a last option if the store manager also insists, please ask him to give you this in writing. And look at their face sulk.
