Kundapur: Don Bosco School Trasi observes Mental Health Day

Kundapur, Oct 11: Don Bosco School, Trasi commemorated the World Mental Health Day in the school auditorium, with an inaugural programme for the Mental Health Awareness Week. The members of the Club of Life collaborated with the students of Senior Secondary, under the guidance of the Head of the department of Wellness to initiate this programme effectively.

The students shared the importance of mental health and the ways of making mental health and well-being a priority for self and others. The event was officially inaugurated by the lighting of lamp and release of the ‘Mental Health Day’ poster by Fr Maxim D’Souza, the rector and principal, accompanied by Fr Ronald Vaz, the vice principal and Rakshitha N J the head, department of Wellness.

Fr Maxim D’Souza, the rector and principal in his presidential address brought awareness on the importance of mental health in academic and overall development of students. He quoted, “Mind is essential to study, focus and pay attention to class. And, as our body is controlled by our mind. It is important to take care of mental health.” He also encouraged the students to participate in all the activities of the Mental Health Awareness Week actively and get benefit of it and not only look for winning as participating is more important for a learning experience. He concluded his thoughtful message with the saying, “Healthy mind resides in a healthy body, thus we need to take care of our body and mind.”

The Mental Health Awareness Week is to be observed throughout the week at school with various activities enhancing the positive environment. Each day of the week is to be marked by one of the themes like smile day, greetings day, day of kindness and gratitude. The students are given opportunity to express their viewpoints on mental health through various events like quotation/slogan writing, story writing, mono acting/ role play, face painting, poster presentation etc. The awareness week will conclude with the valedictory ceremony on Saturday, October 15.

There is no health without mental health. Thus, marking the importance of mental health, every year October 10 is observed as ‘Mental Health Day’. The month of October is considered as ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’. The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and World Health Organization (WHO) host events to spread awareness on importance of mental health with different themes each year. The theme for this year is “Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority”.
