Bengaluru: Vegetable prices witness fluctuations due to rain havoc

Bengaluru, Oct 13: Prices of tomatoes and beetroot have risen due to widespread rainfall in many parts of Karnataka.

The prices of cauliflower, coriander green leaves and other green vegetables have decreased.

Tomatoes which were sold for Rs 45-47 a kilo at Hopcoms outlets last week have gone up to Rs 52 a kilo on Tuesday. Beetroot which was earlier available for Rs 30-40 a kilo is now available at a steep price of Rs 64 a kilo forcing the consumers to go slow on their regular vegetable purchases.
In retail outlets, tomatoes are sold at Rs 40-45 a kilo and beetroot is available at Rs 60 a kilo.

Prices of Coriander green leaves, dill (sabsige/sabbakki soppu) and fenugreek (menthya soppu) leaves have decreased. Coriander green leaves which were sold at Rs 100 a kilo are now available at Rs 50. A bundle of coriander green leaves is now available for Rs 5-10 at the K R Market and retail outlets. Dill and fenugreek leaves are available for Rs 30. Beans is now available for Rs 60 a kilo while double beans is available for Rs 125 a kilo.

Carrot which was available for Rs 100 a kilo at Hopcoms till about a month ago is now available for Rs 92 a kilo. However, due to rainfall, the price of Ooty Carrot has gone up at the retail outlets. The price of bitter gourd is Rs 48 a kilo, green brinjal Rs 43 and round brinjal Rs 28 while horseradish (gorikai) is cheaper along with prices of cauliflower and capsicum.

The produce of onions and potatoes has been affected due to rains. Presently, onions from Madhya Pradesh and Pune are available as it is difficult to store or transport onions grown locally to other parts of the country. Prices of onion are likely to rise according to APMC merchant Udayashankar and so is the case with potatoes, according to merchant N H Kumar.

    Result of double engine government, blaming the rain havoc. This is all result of modi economics. Thank God they do not blame Nehru or Gandhi family.
