Mangaluru, Oct 17: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district will get 20,000 doses of vaccine to treat a skin disease for the cattle.

The vaccines are being sent from Bengaluru on Monday and the cattle will get the vaccine doses in Dakshina Kannada from Tuesday.

In the first phase of vaccination, cattle affected by the skin disease in Biliyur of Bantwal taluk and within a 5 kilometre radius of the village besides goshalas will get vaccinated. The next batch of vaccination doses is likely to be distributed once the first batch of vaccination doses get over.

Arun Kumar, deputy director, Animal husbandry department said this skin disease is not infectious or contagious. Humans, dogs or other animals will not get infected with the skin disease, he said.

Humans will not get infected by the skin disease by consuming milk from the infected cows, he said.

In Dakshina Kannada district, there are no confirmed cases of the skin disease reported among the cattle. However, a cow had died in Biliyur which was suspected to have suffered from the skin disease. The cow's skin samples have been dispatched to a laboratory in Bengaluru for examination and the report is awaited, he said.
