Bantwal: Protests staged against weakening decentralisation authority of panchayats

Bantwal, Oct 18: Protests were held in the leadership of former minister B Ramanath Rai in front of taluk panchayat on Tuesday, October 18, alleging that the state government is curtailing the authority of gram panchayats and weakening the decentralisation system.

He said that the government has not conducted the elections to taluk panchayat and zilla panchayats even after a long time since the term expired as it does not have faith in panchayat raj system.

“Contracts are assigned after obtaining 40% commission and the work is of inferior quality. 70% package of Dalit community is being diverted elsewhere,” he said.

Rajiv Gandhi panchayat raj district president Subhaschandra Shetty said that the BJP government is trying to curtail the authority of gram panchayat members.

Bantwal block Congress president Baby Kunder, Panemangalore block Congress president Sudeep Kumar Shetty, district panchayat former member Chandraprakash Shetty Tumbe, Padmashekar Jain, M S Mohammed, Padmanabha Rai, taluk panchayat former vice president Abbas Ali and others were present.
