Reservation woes haunt ruling BJP in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (IANS): The ruling BJP in Karnataka is in a fix as the demand for reservations has started coming from all corners. The saffron party, before it could take credit for enhancing the reservation for SCs and STs in the state, has been put in a quandry by the reservation demands.

Prominent caste groups, Panchamasali Lingayat community, Kuruba communities had launched agitations demanding reservation. The dominant Vokkaliga community too has joined them.

Vokkaliga seer Nirmalananda Natha Swamiji has given a call for the community to get ready for the struggle to get reservation.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai reacting to the demand stated on Tuesday that Nirmalananda Natha seer has demanded an increase in reservations as per the population and there is nothing wrong in it. He has sought an increase for the Vokkaligas from four to 12 per cent.

"We will think about the demand. An opinion will be sought from the Permanent Committee for Backward Classes and we will also discuss it with legal experts. Later, a decision would be taken in this regard," he stated.

The Billava community, which is prominent in coastal Karnataka region, has also sought reservation. The demand by upper caste groups is worrying the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, where it is making all preparations to emerge victorious in the upcoming assembly elections.

The Ganga Matastha community is claiming reservation for 9 sub- sects under the ST category. Shantha Bheeshma Ambigara Swamiji has stated that the community has been meted out injustice due to denial of reservation. "We request the central government and the state to add the community groups to the ST list, otherwise a huge protest would be organised," he warned.

The Vokkaliga community has also warned of protests if their demands are not fulfilled. The Panchamasali Lingayat community is already agitating for reservations.

Its nothing new. Reservation has been around Independence. All political parties who ruled lived with it and took it forward. Wonder how BJP is in a fix, always.? Congress is clear and will rule with. RaGa as its PM. Not what is being projected here.

My neighbour's daughter got 94% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB), she did not get MBBS seat. Same time, a ST boy with 36% in PCB got MBBS seat in a prestigious Govt college. About 9 lakh students appear for JEE and only who are ranked below 500 get admission in IIT Mumbai. But, one year, they did not get sufficient ST students who passed JEE to cover the reserved quantity, hence they gave admission even to failed ST candidates in IIT, since they said, those ST candidates were qualified as they had passed 12 standard with 50% in PCM !! In our colony in Bangalore, there is a person who studied in NIT Suratkal and he said his rank was 98 in Karnataka, hence he got admission in that college. But, how easy for ST candidates. even if their rank is above 50000,they are getting a seat. I think it is injustice for general candidates. That is the reason, everyone wants reservation.

Agreed, but please note that most of these students doesnt pass from the colleges. They dont get through the private job system too. Only few get into govt jobs and all others dont succeed. But sad that every political party doesnt want to change the system considering the vote bank. Sad but this is the reality
