Mangaluru, Oct 23: A case has been filed against the miscreants who uploaded photo and video of Congress leader Pratibha Kulai in a derogatory manner on social media.

Pratibha had resisted the arrest by police on October 18 during the protest that was staged in front of Surathkal toll gate urging for the closure of the same.

The photo and video that was shot during the arrest of Pratibha was edited in an obscene manner by Shyamsundar Bhat Hosamale and made viral on social media. In addition, Bhat also wrote lewd comments on the edited photo and video as per a complaint filed in women police station of the city.

Going beyond party politics, Surathkal and Brahmarakutlu toll either should go or must have a best before use date. We have witnessed several monsoons after these roads were built and hence the question. Despite being highly used roads, how much of the cost has been recovered and how much is remaining. Even if the balance of total cost recovered is remaining, but not fully recovered, what is the justification for toll increase. Does it mean, recovery will be faster and soon toll gates will go away? Today, for a travel by car to Mangalore the toll alone is ~275. That is 10% of the cost of petrol/diesel needed to cover that distance. Already the surcharge on fuel is staring 50% and add 10% toll to that, we citizens have the right to know, how this money is spent. Of all the earnings, if road building also has to be directly recovered from its users, it demands a question if the funds collected are being put into proper use or not? Regardless of the party that will come to power, unless there is strong consensus among voters, (a) these toll gates will never go, because majority of the users take bus or are not concerned except for use of political arguments. (b) this manifesto alone will not make or break an electoral mandate (c) Toll gate is now on every road in India - and hence it must be a serious election manifesto. Alas, do not expect any political party to take a strong stand on that for the very reasons (a~c) and most importantly, they get to enjoy the spoils when they are in power.

I think this should be a JEE Advanced test question. If Rs. 275 toll is 10% of fuel cost needed to cover 365 Kms, then what is the percentage of tax gained by the Government vis-a-vis earning potential to finance the 365 Km travel by own car. Ans: If 2750 is the fuel cost, earning potential to earn the travel should include income tax (30%) and hence money one needs to earn is Rs. 3575 wherein Rs. 825 is income tax. If let us say 40% is the fuel surcharge paid at the petrol pump, the indirect tax paid at petrol pump is Rs. 1100. Add toll of Rs. 275 to the direct and indirect tax, total tax you have paid out of your earning potential is Rs. 2200. As a percentage of your earning potential the money made by Government therefore is 61.5% of the cost of fuel production for this 365Km travel. Yes, insurance, depreciation of car value etc., registration/road tax charges are not even considered. That is the amount of money Government is making you pay and none of the above components are part of election manifesto of political parties or the voters. India is a developing country, but look at the tax rate, we are higher than developed countries. By this alone, India is a superpower which earns and consumes with enormous wastage which is a luxury.
