Permanent solution to prevent sea erosion in coastal Karnataka promised

Mangaluru/Udupi, Oct 23: In Coastal Karnataka region, sea erosion seems to be dangerously increasing year after year. High tides during the monsoon have caused severe sea erosion.

The National Coastal Research Centre under the Ministry of Earth Sciences has submitted a report based on the sea erosion pattern witnessed between 1990 and 2016 which states that 22% of the 300-km coastline in Karnataka has been corroded and over the last six years this has been an issue of serious concern.

Experts have suggested that an early and swift action needs to be taken by the officials concerned and the department heads. Sea erosion has caused widespread damage to houses that exist close to the seashore.

Experts say the NH-66 that passes through Karwar's Rabindranath Tagore beach is in danger of getting submerged if steps are not taken to prevent sea erosion from causing damage.

Climate change and global warming have contributed to rise in water level in the seas and the damage caused due to sea erosion has not met with adequate relief measures being doled out to the affected people.

To prevent sea erosion big stones have been kept at the shore along with the use of a kind of creeper but these measures have not yielded the desired results.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said a permanent solution will be put in place to prevent sea erosion during the next three months. The sea wave breaker technology has been adopted to prevent sea erosion.

Nature has the best solution for sea erosion, which has protected the coasts for millennia - mangrove forests. Apart from protecting the coast from erosion, the aquatic life in the mangrove forests provides livelihood for the people living in the vicinity. But when man-made "solutions" for sea erosion provide an easy way to loot taxpayers' hard earned money, will our greedy politicians and civil servants take cue from nature? The answer is a big NO.

Only thing permanent is repeat of such promises over and over again without any action. This is a direct message from Karnataka govt that it is not interested in development of coastal Karnataka . Their interest is only Mysore ,Bangalore ,Mandya ,Tumkur and Hassan.

A promise is the only development and growth of this double engine govt. it doesn’t go beyond that. All pending promises will be rephrased for imminent elections, that’s all. BJP doesn’t do anything while ruling nor it allows to do while in opposition except empty promises. All it does is minority bashing and majority appeasing activities.
