Bengaluru, Oct 25: KPCC Chief D K Shivakumar said the former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka received tremendous public support and turned out to be an unprecedented success with people from sections, youth, women and farmers positively responding.

Addressing a news conference at the KPCC office on Tuesday, October 25, he said Rahul Gandhi reached out to the common people and listened to the woes and problems of the people.

"The Bharat Jodo Yatra did not remain simply a padayatra but became a people’s movement and is an honest attempt to give new direction to country’s politics," Shivakumar said youth, women and even young children spontaneously responded by freely walking with Rahul Gandhi.

The KPCC chief said the way women, girls and children as well as farmers and youth mingled with Rahul Gandhi was reminiscent of the public response to his grandmother Indira Gandhi.

There was no slackness in the yatra time-table, Shivakumar said pointing out that Rahul Gandhi would be ready for commencing the yatra by 6.30 am as he used to get up by 5.30 am daily and did not accept any suggestions for delaying the morning journey.

Shivakumar said the momentum generated by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra would not be allowed to dissipate and a pictorial exhibition of the yatra will be held in all districts.

A committee headed by KPCC leader Dhruvanarayan with B L Shankar, V R Sudarshan, Prof Radhakrishna, C S Dwarakanath, Aishwarya Mahadev, Gurupadaswamy, Senthil, Mansoor Ali Khan and Dinesh Gooligowda will study different aspects of the yatra and its impact and also suggest plans for continuing similar campaigns in future.

Answering questions, the KPCC chief said the decision on holding an AICC session in the state would be taken after Mallikarjuna Kharge assumes office as the new Congress president on Wednesday. It will be decided by the new AICC president and the state unit is ready if the honour is given to us, he added.

First find directions for your party boss. You conduct Yatras in day and Modi bashing in the evening. Then the leaders run to a safe Muslim Constituency far away from their own own to contest and win and survive. What signals are you giving the people?

India must Learn from British Democracy! Currently the British political and economic situation is not stable (like many other countries that go through the same from time to time!). However, what I am impressed with is how much more mature and respectful British Democracy is! We hear words like "Moral obligation". "I take responsibility" etc. the contenders and the PM regularly give Press Conferences and media/people ask questions without any fear, we see Leaders resigning if they don't deliver as they promised ! Leaders are elected via proper democratic party regulations after facing rounds of questioning/scrutiny from Party workers! Do we hear any of the latter in India? British Focus is on the important issues like economy, jobs, inflation etc and not on religion, caste, creed etc. The principles of each political party are respected and politicians don't jump from one party to another constantly and regularly change their party principles! Indian senior politicians are self proclaiming India as "Mother of all democracies" but at this stage I think we are more like the "as one Disgust of all democracies!" Can the Indian democracy aspire to reach such high Democratic standards or even show some improvement towards the same

Dear nitin, MANGALORE, You have a point, but really? Out of the 1.3 billion people in India, how many actually understands democracy, except that elections means windfall one way or the other? With great difficulty we have moved from a bunch of jokers forming a lose coalition in the center to a Government with strong mandate. Most importantly, our democracy belongs to precious few. Thanks to social media, some amount of understanding of rights and demand for rights is now starting. And finally, Rushi Sunak has a degree from Oxford and Stanford. Look at the lot that we are propping as our leaders. We have still not come out of our identity based politics fully; Lingayat candidate, Vokkaliga candidate and Billawa candidate rather than chosing based on competency. OK, some may be fixated with Sonia to be PM one day, but unlike Rishi, she was born in Italy, she happened to come because of a marital arrangement with influential Gandhi clan. It is tantamount to demand that Narayan Murthy's daughter become PM of Britain because she is wife of a British citizen. Rishi Sunak is born in Britain, is by Britain, for Britain and from Britain. That is democracy for you in nutshell.

In India they remain in power by buying corrupt politicians from opposition parties and using ED and CBI to threaten opposition.
