Mangaluru, Oct 26: Conjunctivitis also known as red eyes or Madras eye infection has been seen in some parts of coastal region. Hence doctors have advised precautions.
About 10 days ago, the inmates of many houses of Padil under Paduperara village were affected by Madras eye disease. Now the number of people wearing goggles is on the rise in areas of Permude, Ekkaru Gram Panchayat and Bajpe Town Panchayat. Students and vendors are there among the affected and this may result in faster spread of the disease.
When enquired with Bajpe Primary Health Care Centre, the staff said that they did not have any information with regards to Madras Eye disease prevailing in their area. They said that suitable precautions will be taken to keep the disease at bay.
Conjunctivitis is a viral or bacterial infection. This causes inflammation of the upper part of white portion (Sclera) of the eye and the inside part of the eyelids which appear as red or rose coloured. This infection is highly contagious.
There is no definite treatment for this disease. Only eye drops are given to reduce the intensity of the infection.
The spread of conjunctivitis can be avoided by not touching the eyes frequently, washing the hands often and keeping away from the infected person.
