Udupi: Mother of Sorrows Church wins 17th Konkani singing competition at Pangla for fifth year

Udupi, Oct 30: The Mother of Sorrows Church, for the consecutive fifth year, emerged as the winners of 17th diocese-level Konkani singing competition organized by St John Evangelist Church, ICYM, Pangla on occasion of centenary year celebrations. The event was held on Sunday, October 30.

St John The Evangelist Church Pangla and Our Lady of Fathima Church Perampally won thr second and third runner-up positions respectively. 

Dr Gerald Issac Lobo, Bishop diocese of Udupi was the chief guest for the valedictory function. Addressing the gathering, he said, “St John the Evangelist Church, Shankerpura is celebrating its centenary year. Due to the covid outbreak, the competition wasn’t held for the past two years. But this year, ICYM has organized the competition again in a grand way. In all, 27 parishes from the diocese participated in this contest. Our diocese is a rich diocese. We have abundant resources and talents in our diocese. Today’s participation shows the number of singing stars our diocese has. I thank all the contestants, trainers and all those involved in this. I am very much happy to be part of this program. I congratulate ICYM Pangla unit and the Pangla parishioners for organizing such a grand event.

A formal inauguration function was held prior to the competition. Wilson Olievera, renowned Konkani singer, inaugurated the competition by unveiling the trophies.

Fr Ferdinand Gonsalves, parish priest, Shankerpura in his introductory speech said, “This year we are celebrating the centenary year. Singing is the language of heart. It comforts loneliness. Singing is a talent. All the emerging singing stars are here from faraway and nearby places. I wish you everyone a healthy competition. Singing has no barriers. This is a platform to bring together all the budding and experienced singing stars of Udupi diocese under one roof. Renowned singer Wilson Olivera is among us for inaugurating todays program. He has composed more than 800 songs and has performed 56 Wilson Olivera nites in India and abroad. I congratulate and wish good luck to all the participants."

Inaugurating the occasion. renowned Konkani singer Wilson Olivera said, “Sunday is a holy day for the Christians. I feel proud about the parishioners of Pangla. I am honored to receive the felicitation. Music opens the ears of everyone. Music always has a role from our birth to death in our life. You may not win but you wont fail because you have put your efforts. Judging is not easy, I always avoid to sit in the judging panel. Performing is important. Catholic society has many opportunities for singing. Beginning from choir, we always get opportunity to explore. There may be persons who are waiting to bring us down but we need to believe in the almighty. Some have different feelings about Konkani language. We should be proud about Konkani language as it is our mother tongue.”

Wilson Olivera and Sharmila Olivera were felicitated on the occasion.

Fr Valerian Mendonca, rector Milagres Cathedral said, "This is a golden opportunity provided to the talents of Udupi diocese, People worldwide are watching the performances. I wish the best to all the participants”.

Fr Royson Fernandes, PRO, Udupi diocese wished a grand success to the event.

Velita Lobo, Ryneal Sequiera, Joshal Sweeda D'Souza, Shilpa Cutinha, Alwyn Noronha and Meera Crasta were judges for the competition.

Fr Anil Pinto, Anith D’Souza, Flavia Menezes and Oliver Lobo compered the programme. Nikhil Castelino and Pratham D’souza welcomed the gathering. Maria D’Souza and Alister Martis rendered the vote of thanks.
