Mangaluru, Nov 15: Health department officials have intensified their vigil in the light of rising cases of conjunctivitis (eye infections) in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.

The officials have directed all the primary health centres and community health centres to take precautions in the backdrop of rising number of eye infections.

The first case of the conjunctivitis eye infection was diagnosed in Bajpe area a week ago and has now spread among many people.

Primary health centres have directed mothers who are infected with conjunctivitis to visit the centres with their children after a week.

Health department officials said cases of conjunctivitis eye infections are rising in Mangaluru and the rural areas including Adyar, Puttur and Beltangady.

Dakshina Kannada health officer Dr Kishore Kumar said cases of conjunctivitis are increasing in a few areas of the district and precautions are being taken to maintain a strict vigil.

He said eye infections are on the rise due to frequent intermittent rainfall. The infection is likely to last for about five to six days, he said, adding that if the patients complain of continued irritation and redness in their eyes they could visit health centres and get eye drops administered.
