Udupi, Nov 16: “Those who have taken up the responsibility of Malpe beach should provide maximum priority to the safety of the tourists here and St Mary’s island. A Special SOP should be formed,” said deputy commissioner Kurma Rao M.

He was speaking at the DC's office presiding over the Malpe Development Committee meeting.

“All the safety precautions should be taken in the boats running from Malpe beach to the island. Passengers should be asked to wear life jackets. Fines will be levied on those who ferry passengers without life jackets. The food safety officials, municipal council and police department should conduct inspection of unauthorised petty shops ensuring that the food is unadulterated and submit a report,” he said.

“A committee similar to the Malpe Development Authority should be formed to increase tourists at Padukere. A master plan in this connection should be prepared,” said MLA Raghupathi Bhat.

Municipal council president Sumitra Nayak, standing committee president Balakrishna Shetty, Fisheries Federation president Yashpal Suvarna, district panchayat chief executive officer Prasanna, Udaya Kumar Shetty, tourism department assistant director in-charge Guruprasad, officers of various departments, municipal councillors of Malpe, tenderers of Malpe beach, Bhajana mandali representatives and others were present.

The beach is not clean thanks to tourists and locals. Over the years, Malpe has become a tourist spot which is good. But the facilities not improved. There is a big queue near the changing room over the weekends blocking the traffic. They collect 40Rs from each vehicle (separately for sea walk and for beach) even if there is no parking available. Not sure how they spend this money. Few months back I was sitting near the beach along with my friend and a resident from other side of beach road came and dumped a bed directly into into the sea! The beach is still better than Mumbai or Chennai, but if not maintained it may see the same fate.
