Student police cadet programme: 47 schools in Dakshina Kannada, 24 in Udupi selected

Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 18: Student Police Cadet (SPC), brain child of former president of India late Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, is in implementation in schools throughout the country. Home and education departments of Karnataka are also taking steps for proper implementation of the same.

In total, 71 schools in the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada (DK) are selected for the scheme in the current year. The aim of the programme is to instill discipline, awareness, leadership qualities and civic knowledge among the students.

The government of Kerala implemented SPC in 2010 itself. The Karnataka government is following the same. In DK, 47 schools, including 17 under rural limits and 30 under the commissionerate limits are selected for the programme while in Udupi district 24 schools are selected.

In DK, 2,068 students and in Udupi 1,056 students will get trained. The selected schools will be given Rs 50,000 for the expenses of training.

Students of eighth and ninth grade are eligible to be trained under this scheme. Selected students will be trained on three Saturdays in a month after school hours.

Selected students will be trained on the role of police department in society, social issues, road safety, first aid, rain and safety of children, handling of natural calamity, yoga practice and functioning style of police stations. The training is given with the active cooperation of police, education department BEO and school headmaster or headmistress.
