Bengaluru, Nov 18: JD(S) legislature party leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has alleged that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre is planning to constitute a tribunal on the sharing of South Pinakini or Pennar River Water Sharing issue.
“If the Modi regime goes ahead with constituting a tribunal on Pennar water sharing issue, it will be a death knell for the people of Karnataka,’’ he said in a tweet and urged all Kannadigas to rise in protest against the Centre’s attempts to snatch the water shares of the State.
The JD(S) leader has demanded that the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP regime must strongly protest this encroachment on the State’s river water shares.
In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy said the national parties whether BJP or Congress are harmful to the interests of Karnataka and have been repeatedly hurting the interests of the State.
Kumaraswamy said the State has been embroiled in the Cauvery Water Dispute for over a century. The Modi regime is dragging its feet on the Mekedatu issue and now the Pinakini water sharing issue is another burning problem, he said.
The former Chief Minister said the Union government has done grave injustice to Karnataka on the Godavari, Krishna and now Pinakini and Cauvery water issues.
The Union government has recently revealed that 247 tmc ft of water is being diverted to Cauvery river from Krisbna and Pennar, and the entire water is being shared between Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with nothing for Karnataka. This is a grave injustice to the State, Kumaraswamy said and wondered how the joining of Krishna-Cauvery rivers is going to benefit Karnataka.
He warned that the JD(S) will stoutly oppose any move by the Centre to constitute a tribunal on the sharing of Pinakini river water.
