Mangaluru: St Aloysius Gongaza School holds Annual Sports Day

Mangaluru, Nov 26: "Play the game with the right spirit of the game,” said Dr Gerald Santhosh D Souza, director and chairman of the department of Physical Education, Mangalore University. He inaugurated the Annual Sports Day of St Aloysius Gonzaga School for classes VI to XI, on November 21 in Mangala Stadium, in a spectacular inaugural ceremony.

Fr Melwin Pinto SJ, rector of St Aloysius Institutions, in his presidential address congratulated students for their spectacular march past and display. He applauded the participation spirit and stated that sports are not a distraction from studies, but instead will prepare the students better for it. The Principal Fr Melwyn Anil Lobo SJ wished all the students a very joyful Sports Day and encouraged them that every student should take up at least one sport to enhance physical fitness. Deepa Karkada welcomed the august gathering. The sports vice prefect, Verina Sweedol DSouza administered the oath to the athletes. Vidya Esther compered the inaugural ceremony. Vice-principal Laurel D Souza was present for the inaugural ceremony. Various track and field events were organized on this occasion and the winners were awarded certificates and medals. The valedictory ceremony was graced by Fr Dr Praveen Martis, principal, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) who congratulated all the students and appreciated their true sportsmanship.

Bhakshith Salian, Khelo India Athletics Coach, Dakshina Kannada was the chief guest of the Annual Sports Day for classes I to V in Pathala Ground, held on November 19. He opined that Class IV is the right age to take up any one sport for each individual and encouraged students to come forward and participate in sports from a very young age. Various games were conducted for students of classes I to V. The Annual Sports Day embodied the zeal, talents and spirit of sportsmanship of the Gonzagaites. Physical Education Teachers Agnes Saldanha, Aditya Shetty, Vinod M P were the conveners of the Annual Sports Day.
