Cold wave to last a week or more: Health dept issues list of Dos & Don’ts

Bengaluru, Dec 13: With Bengaluru and several parts of Karnataka experiencing a cold wave due to light and intermittent showers, cold breeze and lower temperatures during the day and nights on account of the cyclone Manduous, the State Health Department has in an advisory indicated that the cold wave conditions were expected to last at least a week or more.

The Department has in its advisory said there is also a prediction of one more cyclonic storm hitting Bay of Bengal during next week.

In view of this and also the winter season ahead, it is important that general public at large, children (including infants), pregnant women, elderly citizens, those with other co-morbid conditions and specially those suffering from other serious illnesses remain protected during this period.

Hence, the State Health Department has come with a list of Dos and Don’ts to be followed by the citizens as a precautionary measures to ensure good health.

List of Do's

1. It is advised to - Keep yourself hydrated and preferably drink warm water/ warm soups. Consume freshly prepared food and which are easy to digest. Keep yourself warm by wearing sweaters, socks, and gloves and stay warm even when you are indoors. Bathe in hot/warm water.
2. Avoid going outside, unless it is necessary. Plug your ears with cotton or use scarf etc. and wear mask while stepping out.
3. Avoid coming in contact with those who have fever, cold, cough etc.
4. Cough or sneeze using tissue/hand kerchief while coughing
5. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently.
6. Visit your doctor if you have fever and flu like symptoms Or symptoms of any other illness.
7. Do not self-medicate yourself.

List of Don’ts

1. It is advised NOT to- Consume cool drinks, ice creams etc.
2. Consume cold or refrigerated water.
3. Get drenched in the rains/exposed to chilly & windy conditions.
4. Go on long journeys (especially week end trips or sightseeing trips
5. Consume spicy/masala laden foods. District/BBMP Health authorities should ensure creation of awareness on the same, so that the vulnerable population remain healthy during the season/period.
