Tagore Birth Aniversary Celebration in Egypt


Cairo, May 23 (IANS) The Indian embassy will organise a special function here May 28 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of India's Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

It will be organised at the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture in Cairo. Egyptian economist and writer, Galal Amin, will give a talk titled: "Remembering Rabindranath", the Indian embassy said in a statement.

It will be followed by a rendering of Rabindrasangeet. R. Swaminathan, India's ambassador to Egypt, and Mizanur Rahman, Bangladesh's ambassador to the north African country, are among others who will attend the function.

Rabindranath Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, became the first Asian Nobel laureate. Tagore was a master of several literary forms. He was a poet, a novelist, a short-story writer and a playwright.

The event is being organised in cooperation with the embassy of Bangladesh in Cairo and the Cultural Development Fund of Egypt's cultural ministry, the statement said.
