Karunanidhi in Delhi, to Meet Kanimozhi in Jail

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) DMK chief M. Karunanidhi arrived here Monday on a "personal visit" to meet his daughter and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, who is in Tihar Jail in connection with the 2G spectrum corruption case.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister was unlikely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi as he was on a "personal visit", DMK sources said. The DMK is a member of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance.

Karunanidhi is expected to meet Kanimozhi Monday evening. He is also likely to meet DMK MP and former communication minister A. Raja as well as Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar, who too are in jail, the DMK sources added.

Rajathi Ammal - Kanimozhi's mother and the third wife of Karunanidhi - is likely to accompany Karunanidhi to the prison.

Kanimozhi, whose bail petition was denied and sent to jail by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court Friday, filed an appeal in the Delhi High Court Monday. It will come up for hearing Tuesday.

The DMK leader used to meet Gandhi during earlier trips to Delhi.

"The arrest (of Kanimozhi) is a vendetta against DMK and my family," Karunanidhi had said in an open letter to party cadres in the DMK official journal Friday.

In an apparent expression of the DMK's disappointment over the arrest of Kanimozhi, none of the six union ministers of the party attended the second anniversary function of the UPA II government here Sunday. The DMK was represented only by former minister T.R. Baalu.
