Bengaluru, Dec 17: After his failure to wrest the Mandya lok sabha seat in 2019 against BJP supported Sumalatha Ambarish, wife of Kannada movie star late Ambarish better known as Mandyada Gandu, Nikhil Kumaraswamy will be contesting from the Ramanagara assembly constituency in the coming 2023 assembly polls.
The candidature of Nikhil, son of JD(S) legislature party leader H D Kumaraswamy, was announced by the former Chief Minister Anita Kumaraswamy herself on Saturday. Incidentally, Anita Kumaraswamy is the sitting MLA from Ramanagara. She had earlier won from Channarayanapatna.
The Channarayapatna seat is presently held by H D Kumaraswamy. Announcing the decision to field Nikhil Kumaraswamy from her own Ramanagara seat in the 2023 assembly polls, Anita Kumaraswamy appealed to the people to extend the full support and backing to her son just as was accorded to her father-in-law and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda, and her husband and to herself.
H D Kumaraswamy stood by the side of his wife while she announced their son’s candidature from Ramanagara constituency.
``There was false propaganda and wild speculation. So I have decided to put an end to all the rumours by announcing that Nikhil will be contesting from Ramangara,’’ Anita Kumaraswamy said.
According to party insiders, Anita Kumaraswamy has decided not to contest in the assembly polls. But, however, the last word on the subject is yet to be decided and she might well be persuaded to enter the fray from another Vokkaliga stronghold.
It may be recalled that the former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda is the Rajya Sabha member after his defeat in the last lok sabha polls from Tumkuru seat by BJP candidate G S Basavaraju.
Deve Gowda’s elder son H D Revanna is the MLA representing Holenarasipur constituency in Hassan district while Revanna’s son Prajwal Revanna is the lok sabha member from Hassan district.
Revanna’s wife Bhavani Revanna has been busy working for entering the electoral fray from Hassan assembly constituency and contesting against BJP sitting MLA Preetham Gowda.
In the event of Anita Kumaraswamy being persuaded to enter the electoral fray despite her reluctance, several members of the Deve Gowda family will be entering the legislature too and it will make three members from H D Kumaraswamy’s family – Kumaraswamy, Nikhil and Anita – in the poll fray and also as members of the assembly if all get elected.
