Mangaluru, Dec 18: The First Neuro Brain and Spine Super Speciality Hospital, Karnataka’s only dedicated Neuropathology lab in the private sector, was opened in Padil in city.
The Neuropathology Lab was inaugurated by Dr Manmonjith Singh, Professor of Neurology, AIIMS, New Delhi. He expressed appreciation for the initiative of First Neuro Brain and Spine Super Speciality Hospital. Dr Rajesh Shetty, consultant neurologist and medical director, Dr Shankar Shetty, director, Roshni Shetty, director, Ranjith Shetty, COO, doctors and staff members of the First Neuro Hospital were present.
First Neuro Brain and Spine Super Speciality Hospital’s Neuropathology Lab is unique in being the only one of its kind in the city that supports the diagnosis of all biopsies of the central and peripheral nervous system and muscles.

So far in Karnataka such a facility was available only in NIMHANS, Bengaluru.

This is a neuropathology laboratory that examines surgical specimens including biopsies for brain, spine, bone, nerves and muscle diseases, provides expertise regarding the pathology of brain, spinal cord, muscle, and nerve tissue. Consultation services are available for the interpretation of all aspects of adult and paediatric neuropathology, including muscle and nerve biopsies, and provided immediately by pathologists with subspecialty training in neuropathology. Muscle biopsy
A muscle biopsy is a procedure used to diagnose diseases involving muscle tissue. The physician removes tissue and cells from a specific muscle and First Neuro Brain and Spine Super Speciality Hospital Neuropathology Laboratory will view them microscopically. This muscle biopsy needs to be processed within 12 hours of biopsy and now can be processed in the lab at First Neuro. Earlier such analysis could be done only in labs in Bengaluru. Such a facility will benefit not only the people of the city but all in the adjoining areas too, according to a representative of the hospital management.
This will benefit people from Kerala in Kasargod, Kannur and Kozhikode. In Karnataka, people from the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Karwar, Hassan, Kodagu, Davangere, Chitradurga and Shivamogga will benefit. The hospital has constructed the lab spending almost Rs 3 crore on the infrastructure and latest latest technology.

The Neuropathology Lab is led by Dr Anusha S, trained neuropathologist who has completed her postgraduate studies in pathology from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi after which she gained a post-doctoral fellowship in neuropathology and was trained under experts at NIMHANS. She has previously served as assistant professor (Pathology), KMC Mangaluru. She has expertise in muscle, and nerve tissue studies as well as brain and spine tumors and has around 15 scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals of national and international repute to her credit.
