Pilot refuses pet to fly: Year-end trip of Bengaluru family goes haywire

Bengaluru, Dec 19 (IANS): The adamant stand taken by an Air India pilot not to allow a pet dog to board a flight has led to the vacation plans of a Bengaluru family going haywire.

The family am of HR professional, Sachin Shenoy, his wife Uma and daughter Aarya was to leave for New Delhi by 5.20 pm Air India flight on Saturday. They had an 18-month-old pet dog with them and were in constant touch with Air India officials on the presence of the pet dog.

Sachin in social media post said, "I was told that Air India was a pet-friendly airline and that I could take it in cabin with me and I booked through them."

The pet was issued an ‘Fit to Fly' certificate and fitness was okayed by an airline staffer not a vet. The pet, ‘fluffy' was also given a boarding pass.

Sachin in his social media post said, "When we were waiting at the Gate no 17 of Bengaluru airport for boarding, the staff there told us that we could board the flight and leave the pet behind."

Sachin said that the airline staff told him that the commander of the flight was not okay with the pet being on board and refused permission.

Sachin also took a video of the matter and posted it on social media handles.

Air India responded through its Twitter handle and said, "The commander of the flight was not fully satisfied with the cage and the muzzle of the pet, which is why he could not allow it to be carried in the cabin. Our laid down policy for the carriage of pets on domestic flights clearly mentions that. Pet carriage is subject to the approval of the commander of the flight."

Instead of whining how about getting a correct crate and muzzle for your pet? Rules are there to follow not to bend.

These pet owners need to be trained on how to manage pets .. for that the owners themselves should be disciplined and Pet worthy . Pets are often bought for social status and not with real love towards pets and animals . I know many who discard their pets when its initial charm as a puppy is lost and it gets old and unhealthy.

some people are going overboard with displaying their pets in public. Govt should ban carrying pets in flights/trains. It can cause trouble to co-travellers.

Airlines are very strict when taking a dog in the flight. Even, one time we had to take a patient to another city for treatment and while booking, we asked for the wheel chair facility for the patient. Airlines told us to bring the certificate from the doctor that the patient is fit for travel on a flight.

India could not patent a car engine to it's name till date and Aero Plane? Very good and brave decision by the pilot. Shenoy maam should understand the trouble other passenger go through. worst case all the passenger approval should be taken before authorities approving such papers.

Very Good decision by the Pilot; The animal is pet for the family not to the fellow passengers! Its the safety issue and with this decision pilot has ensured no commotional situation on board. In return Air India must file a complaint against this family for trying to tarnish the Brand Image! Looks like family wanted to gain media attention and popularity, in return has adversely impacted! Great Going Air India! Maharajaha is soon going to be major player in Aviation industry without these nonsense passengers!

Though unpleasant for the family commander is right in his stance... Knowingly unpredictable items can not be allowed in a sensitive airline cabin... It was the duty of the family to make sure the cage was foolproof... Lesson learnt for the future... Lucky that we have no covid they can always travel anytime again...

It is ridiculous. When ticket is booked for pet, air line must ask the traveler to present the pet to their so call "animal hate" Commander to get "OK to board certificate". Why air line made the rule "Pet carriage is subject to the approval of the commander of the flight."? Just to spoil the holiday plan of the traveler or to loot the passenger's money. I don't think passage travelled because decision done at last stage. All 4 tickets are waste. one man decision ruined the holiday of Air India Passenger. Hats off to the "Great commander"

Dude, I think you need some insight on why the Captain did what he did. It is NOT just an airline policy that a Captain makes a decision. It’s a standard that is followed globally in all commercial airlines. The DGCA itself holds a Captain responsible to take any final decision in an aircraft. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation which is a statutory body of the Government of India makes imperative policies . A Pilot-in-command is the final authority in any given aircraft. The Captain (Commander of the flight /Pilot in Command(PIC) ) is solely responsible for any decision made in the flight. He/She has to sign the last document known as an airplane release certificate (ARC) or something of that sort that states that he is aware of what has been approved in the flight. This document will be signed by all staff responsible first and the final signature would be of the Pilot-in-command who is the final authority of any aircraft. The Captain also has the authority to deny a passenger if he/she thinks that the passenger is a risk to the flight. There are some passengers that don’t follow guidelines or create a ruckus and such passengers can also be asked to deplane. As the Captain is the final authority, the Captain will also be held responsible if any incident occurs once the airplane takes off. The Captain has to safeguard his/her license and that’s why they are extremely strict. After paying a crore plus to study and get a pilot license and working in such a stressful environment, why would a Captain take any risk wherein he can be grounded without pay for any wrong decisions? They also operate many sectors each day which can be stressful. We feel tired traveling from point A to Point B . They fly 4 to 6 sectors a day sometimes. They need to know what they have approved in each sector. If there is no pet certificate from the vet, why approve? .Why would a Captain take the risk and approve something that can be held against him/her if matter goes out of hand?

We brought two grownup dogs from Abu Dhabi to Bangalore. We had proper papers & preapproved cage. Animals may be pets for us but not necessarily for others. There are many people who are afraid of even the smallest dog.
