Udupi: Rare Ghol fish caught at Malpe fishing port, sold for over Rs 2 lac

Udupi, Dec 27: Luck smiled on the fishermen of Malpe fishing port near here with them catching a rarest of rare and highly priced Ghol fish on a boat. The fish was sold for more than Rs 2 lacs.

As the news of Goli (local name) fish catch spread like wildfire, other fishermen at port rushed to see the rare catch.

The fish weighed 22 kgs and was sold for Rs 2,34,080. This fish is used in the manufacture of medicines. Scientific name of Goli fish is Ghol fish. This lives on the sea bed and rarely comes to the surface. This is found in the Arabian Sea and oceans of Sri Lanka and Australia.

A special pouch in the stomach of Ghol fish is used in cosmetics manufacturing. It has a huge demand overseas. One fish grows to around one meter. Ghol fish weighing 30 kg fetches a price of Rs 5 lacs.

A few months ago fishermen on the Balram boat owned by Shanraj Thottam caught Goli fish weighing 20 kg. It was sold for Rs 1.90 lacs.

It may be recalled that a fisherman in Maharashtra became crorepati overnight as he caught 157 ghol fish which were sold for Rs 1.33 crore in September 2021.
