Udupi, Jan 1: Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi Diocese offered rich tributes to former Pope Benedict XVI, who died in Vatican City on Saturday.

In his condolence message, the bishop said, “The news of the death of Pope Benedict XVI, who was one of the important and influential leaders of the 21st century has saddened us. I pray for eternal peace to the departed soul.
Joseph Ratzinger of German origin was a theologian par excellence and an excellent administrator. Before being chosen as the Pope, he was the bishop and cardinal and was deeply involved in the administration of the Vatican and Catholic church. Several books were written by the late pope which stand witness to his knowledge."

“After the death of Pope John Paul II, Joseph Ratzinger was elected as the Pope and he took the name of Benedict XVI and led hundreds of crores of Catholics worldwide for eight years. In 2013, due to ill health, he resigned from the position of Pope. He was the first Pope to do so in the 600 years history of the Catholic Church," added the bishop.

“Due to his simplicity, limited speech and deep knowledge, Pope Benedict XVI strengthened Christian community throughout the world. Though he did not get an opportunity to visit India during his short tenure of eight years, he had great regards for the country. He was the one who announced the new diocese of Udupi in 2012. He was very concerned and interested in the diocese of Udupi," recalled the bishop.

“After voluntary retirement from the position of Pope, he used to spend his time in prayers, meditation and studies. He was not suffering from any serious disease or condition. He died on the morning of December 31 peacefully. This is a very sad and sorrowful incident to the whole Catholic fraternity throughout the world.

Special prayers will be offered in all churches of Udupi Diocese and religious centres on December 31 and January 1 in memory of the late Pope. We pray that the merciful Lord will grant him eternal rest,” said Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo.
