Mangaluru: First pediatric bone marrrow transplant held at Yenepoya Medical College

Mangaluru, Jan 4: A pediatric bone marrow transplant was done for the first time at the pretigious Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru, under the leadership of blood cancer specialist Dr Rajesh Krishna.

A 14-year-old girl from Bantwal was suferring from relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma and was admitted to the bone marrow transplant department. Her stem cells were collected throgh an apheresis machine. They were kept at 80 degrees Celcius. Later, the disease was brought under control with chemotheraphy and the conserved stem cells were given to the girl again. The girl recovered fully within 2 weeks. Though mild fevers and infections were observed, they were cured with appropriate treatment.

This is the first time in Mangaluru that a child's bone marrow transplant has been conducted. The procedure was performed by a skilled oncological team led by Dr Rajesh Krishna.

Dr Rajesh Krishna who trained in London for 15 years and has practised for 10 years is presently serving at Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru. Leukemia patients can avail themselves of the services of his team at Zulekha Cancer Centre.
