Udupi, Jan 5: Thawarchand Gehlopt, governor of Karnataka inaugurated the All India inter university volleyball championship for men 2022-23 organized by Mangalore University and Poornaprajna college herein Poornaprajna college Udupi on Thursday, January 5.

On inaugurating the tournament Thawarchand Gehlot, governor of Karnataka said, “It is a proud feeling for all of us that this tournament is being held in Udupi. Udupi is known for its social, cultural, historical and religious importance. Sri Sri Vibudeshatheertha swamiji of Admar Mutt is known for his contribution in the education field, this is continued even today by Sri Sri Vishwapriya theertha swamiji and Sri Sri Eeshapriya theertha swamiji. Poornapraja institutions excel in the educational field. The Indian team will be selected from this tournament. I have been a sportsperson myself. I used to play Kabaddi and volleyball. The Prime Minister of India has given importance to sports on various occasions. Fit India and Kehlo India are dream programmes of the Prime Minister. These programmes aims at creating Olympics ready sports persons. India performed very well in the Tokyo Olympics. Karnataka is also supporting sports very much. Government is trying to recognize Karnataka as International sports hub,” he said.

Governor also greeted the players and wished them success.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, minister of backward class and social welfare Dr GS Chandrashekar, secretary PCMC Dr Raghavendra A, principal Dr Kishore Kumar CK, registrar Mangalore University Sukumar, convener and other delegates were present on the dais.

The tournament will be held for five days till January 8.
