Bangalore, May 31 (DNA): The high court has directed the state government to take a positive decision regarding the setting up of special courts in Bangalore to protect children from criminal offences. A division bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar on Monday directed the state to submit the details by June 30.

Maya CP, a social worker, had filed a public interest litigation before the high court, demanding special courts in the city to protect children.

The petitioner had contended that according to the Commission for the Protection of the Child Rights Act, special courts for children along with special public prosecutors should be constituted.On March 7, the high court directed the state government to provide data regarding the complaints against criminal offences on children in the state.

According to the details submitted by the state on Monday, 908 cases related to criminal offences against children were pending in Bangalore since 2006. The government also submitted that since 2006, a total of 1,734 such cases were pending in the state.

Since Bangalore had a large number of pending cases, a special court should be constituted in the city, submitted the government counsel.
