Tejaswi Surya flight issue: Scindia says emergency exit was opened by mistake in IndiGo plane

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS): Amid the controversy surrounding the opening of an emergency exit in IndiGo flight by Karnataka BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed on Wednesday, that the door was opened last month "by mistake", and the person who opened it had apologised.

IndiGo had said on Tuesday, that a passenger had accidentally opened the emergency exit of a plane at the Chennai airport on December 10. The passenger had apologised, said the airlines.

While the airline did not name the passenger, few opposition parties have reacted on the matter, claiming that the person responsible for the act was BJP MP from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya.

Without naming Surya, the Civil Aviation Minister on Wednesday confirmed that the passenger who by mistake, opened the emergency exit, leading to a two-hour delay of the flight, had apologised for his act.

"I won't respond to what the opposition is saying. It's important to look at the facts. The door was opened by him by mistake when the flight was on the ground and after all checks, the flight was allowed to take off," Scindia said.

According to a statement issued by IndiGo on Tuesday, a passenger travelling on Flight 6E 7339 from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli on Dec 10, 2022, accidentally opened the emergency exit during the boarding process.

"The passenger immediately apologised for his action. As per SOPs, the incident was logged and the aircraft underwent mandatory engineering checks, which led to a delay in the flight's departure," said the airline.

"The event was duly reported. It appears that by mistake, the RH emergency exit got opened by a passenger while the aircraft was on the ground. The crew took note and as a result, all the appropriate airworthiness action such as reinstalling of door, pressurisation check etc., were carried out before the release of the aircraft for departure. No safety was compromised," a senior DGCA official had said on Tuesday.

If this 'mistake' was done by a commoner it would have been given a terror hue! It's a very serious mistake and needs to be treated as per violation of international airline safety guidelines rules!!

Dear Sir Tejaswi, Even if you had to simply live by the meaning of your name was more than enough and i understand that it is not the first time you are flying without any supervision. I have met people who hail from the remotest places in the world where they do not get access to common transport, and yet they understand their safety and others safety when in flight even if it was their first flight ever. Either your were under heavy substance abuse that you did so, or it is your childish pride and thoughts that you will get away by doing anything and no one will question you. "Law and water bodies behave exactly the same way. you block their path, they make their path anyway". Dear Aviation Minister, Could you please let us know the consequences if a common man had to open the emergency exit just like how our dear Minister Tejaswi did ? Can i go away just with an apology letter for all the inconvenience that is been caused by such act risking various lives. And for god sake don't label the deliberate offence done by Mr. Tejaswi as a mistake. It's a Airplane emergency exit door, and not a bathroom door that you push the knob down and it opens. There is procedure to follow before evacuation. Hence requesting the authorities to take strict actions which symbolically sets examples to all who intend to do so in the future and cause inconvenience, and also requesting senior ministers to replace Mr. Tejaswi from his position and appoint a deserving candidate who is willing to serve our nation. Jai Hind!

In his earlier statement he wanted complete inquiry on this incident coz he was not aware who was the passenger after knowing person who open the exit door of flight is his party MP immediately inquiry stopped and gave statement by mistake he opened, if this done by common person it would be big issue and they would have banned him for air travel and put case on him with hug fine.

The question is - what would you have done if a common man had to do the same mistake. Secondly why it was hidden from the public. It is a serious lapse on the part of the MP. Prompt disclosure would have helped the airline to include this subject in their SAFETY DRILLS to ensure awareness amongst future passengers. Tejaswi has been carrying a tough behaviour even in Bangaluru.

Was the minister informed that it was the emergency exit door that was opened and not the toilet door that was opened. What a way to defend an useless person. Now one thing is sure if any other person opens the emergency exit door there will be no action taken because the minister confirmed that the door can open by mistake.

Airline safety and safety related issues of a flight is not Ministers jurisdiction -- Minister has a maharajah approach which his forefathers enjoyed not now -- In civil aviation, the Pilot in Command has the ultimate responsibility for the safe operation of the aircraft and he shoulder this responsibility as a profession.-- What if the flight crashes -- Passengers -- Will this man then be responsible -- MINISTER Basically jobless -- talks out of his hat -- like the person whom he is protecting -- This has also international ramifications -- There could have been Foreigners -- not that Indian life less precious-- But to make casual statements -- irresponsible-- WE WILL BE LAUGHING STOCK -- OR ALREADY ARE --
