Chicago, Jun 2 (PTI) Illinois has become the sixth state in the United States to recognise civil unions or domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
With the signing of this landmark bill by Governor Pat Quinn, for the first time in Illinois' history gay couples will be given the same rights as heterosexual couples.
"We believe in civil rights, and we believe in civil unions," Quinn said after signing the bill this afternoon at the Chicago Cultural Center, according to the Chicago Tribune.
"We believe in liberty and justice for all," Quinn added.
The law which took effect yesterday allows gay couples to get the same rights as their married counterparts.
It also allows for heterosexual couples to signify a commitment short of marriage.
Besides Illinois, the District of Columbia and five other states allow gay marriage.
