Attempt to kill Zardari Foiled: Reports

Islamabad, June 5 (IANS) An attempt to kill Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has been foiled after eight alleged plotters were nabbed from different parts of the country, Xinhua reported.

Four of them were held in Islamabad and four others were nabbed in Punjab province Saturday night.

Security forces first learnt about the plot on May 21 when they intercepted a call, the Express TV channel said.

Pakistani militants have vowed to avenge the death of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden who was gunned down by the US security forces in Pakistan's Abbottabad town May 2.

On May 22, over a dozen security personnel were killed and two US-made P3C Orion surveillance planes and a chopper were destroyed in a daring terrorist attack on a naval air force base in Karachi.

Four days later, 36 people were killed and over 50 others injured in a car bomb attack in the northwestern Hangu city.
