After Australia, it's Canada again -- Hindu temple vandalised

Toronto, Jan 31 (IANS): A Hindu temple has been vandalised with 'anti-India' graffiti in Canada's Brampton province, leaving the Indian community in shock.

The Indian Consulate General in Toronto issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the attack on the Gauri Shankar Mandir in Brampton.

"The hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We have raised our concerns on the matter with Canadian authorities," the consulate office said in a statement.

The matter is currently under investigation by the Canadian authorities.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown condemned the defacing of the temple, which is a symbol of Indian heritage.

"This hateful act of vandalism has no place in our city or country," Brown tweeted.

He added that he had raised his concerns over this hate crime with Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah.

"Everyone deserves to feel safe in their place of worship," Brown said.

The incident comes close to three Hindu temples being targeted in Australia with anti-India graffiti by Khalistani groups in the month of January alone.

In July 2022, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at a Vishnu Temple in the Richmond Hill neighbourhood of Canada was desecrated.

In September 2022, Canada's BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir was defaced by alleged Khalistani miscreants with anti-India graffiti.

India had then issued a strongly-worded statement urging Canadian authorities to properly investigate the "increasing incidents" of hate crime against Indians.

More than 2.46 lakh Indians immigrated to Canada between 2016 and 2021, according to a recent Statistics Canada report.

The National Statistical Office of Canada showed a 72 per cent rise in hate crimes in Canada between 2019 and 2021 targeting a person's race, religion or sexual orientation.

Though it is wrong I am not surprised. The things happening in other parts of world is just reflection of what is happening in India. Indian Government has no right to condemn this act as it failed miserably to control attack on Churches and Mosques in India.

Any literate person will never involve in desecration of any religion. Having said that, one must remember - Religion is a private matter. Practice one's faith in one's own home or in one's own heart. When religion is demonstrated publicly and religious monuments are attacked and destroyed worldwide (not only in India, Canada or Australia), these unimaginable incidents take place. Build a world full of peace, love and affection. Do not demonstrate your faith on the streets; Else, we will have many more such incidents to face. Recently there were disturbances in Nordic countries involving another religion. WHY WHY WHY. It is the literate lot that uses media to inflame feelings. PLEASE STOP IT. All of us are guests on this mother earth. Why take our torn bodies, in the name of religion, to our grave??

Roshan...Can we know why in Turkey Hagia Sophia Church, Byzanite Church, Chora Church, Orthodox Church and many more churches into Mosques. May I know the reason behind. It means whereever people are in majority no chance for minority to live peacefully either in Middle East or in Kashmir, Pakistan, Darfur. In India mughals destroyed more than one lakh historical temples which had special place in the heart of Indians. We had seen a strongest country invaded Kuwait same done by Mughals. We need our religious place back thru propper way.

@Raj, who started it here in India and who is still doing it? Can you not ask them to refrain by teaching some moral lessons? If you can't stop them then you have no rights to stop others.

When we pour milk to venomous snake often no doubt one or other day it will going to bite without hestiation. It was what done by former Late PM given fuel to incite Khalistani movement thru Sant Bindarwale. Reason behind Akali Dal led by Santa Longowal are always on victory spree to destablise raised question of Khalistani movement. Activity gone to such a extent with blue star wants to hunt people inside religious place. Latter on everybody knows due to storm into religious place was to pay the price for it. Now same movement is active in Canada, Australia, Pakistan and many more places are funded by vested interest to destablise India's growing economy.
