Washington, June 8 (IANS) Reiterating that New Delhi's action against yoga guru Baba Ramdev is "an internal matter", the United States has said it believed that any questions raised by the incident will be addressed by India's democratic institutions.
Noting that the Indian Supreme Court has taken up the issue of police action against Ramdev supporters, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Tuesday: "India is a country with a strong democratic tradition."
"And it's a place where people have the freedom to express themselves in a peaceful manner in accordance with the law," he said repeating his comments Monday that the US "believe this is an internal matter."
"And we also believe that any questions raised by this incident will be addressed by India's democratic institutions."
"It speaks to the strength of India's democracy that it's able to take these issues on and to hold people accountable if need be," Toner said. "And we've seen that with the Indian media, and now we're seeing it with its legal institutions as well."
