Beedi Workers to Get Medical Insurance Benefits

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) About 55 lakh beedi workers will soon get medical insurance benefits under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) by 2013-14 under a proposal approved by the Union Cabinet today.

A meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, decided to extend the insurance cover to the beedi workers spread across the country, with the government spending an estimated Rs 311.25 crore on it.

"It is proposed to cover ten lakh beedi workers in the current financial year and 100 per cent of the total beedi workers by 2013-14", Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters here.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni described the decision as "a significant and important agenda of the UPA government".

Under the scheme, the worker and his family of five would benefit with a medical insurance cover of Rs 30,000.

    Great job on the part of those that are responsible for promoting a suitable Medical Insurance benefit for 55 lakhs of workers engaged in the Beedi industry.

    We have visited Bharat Beedi Works long time ago and we were fascinated by the way in which the Beedi workers are engaged in this unique cottage industry that produces tons of Beedies for domestic as well as export market.

    Fiftyfive lakhs of workeers must be supporting the daily simple livelihood of more than twohundred lakhs of dependants in Mother India where so many millions of people are engaged with their own dignity of labour. Let us take care of people's health and welfare so that a healthy nation will survive with their daily bread that comes to them thru the dedication of their hard and honest labour. Eventually when the economy improves and suitable alternative employment is created the Beedy industry can slowly diminish and smoking be gradually discouraged and save life. God bless.
