Jun 9 : The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor has reportedly said that there is evidence that Libyan leader Col Muammer Gaddafi ordered the rape of hundreds of women as a weapon against rebel forces.
According to BBC, ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo was looking at possible evidence that Gaddafi’s security forces had been Viagra and other such medication to enhance their sex drive.
He said that rape was a new aspect of Gaddafi’s repression and that Gaddafi hoped rapes would instil fear and discourage the rebels .
Libyan authorities have yet to comment on the allegations.
On May 16, Luis Moreno-Ocampo had asked the ICC to issue arrest warrants against Muammar Abu Minya Gaddafi, Saif Al Islam Gaddafi and the Head of the Intelligence Abdullah Al Sanousi for war crimes against humanity committed in Libya since February 2011.
The ICC prosecutor’s office had direct evidence against MuammarGaddafi, Saif Al Islam and Al Sanousi.
The evidence showed that civilians were attacked in their homes; demonstrations were repressed using live ammunition, heavy artillery was used against participants in funeral processions, and snipers placed to kill those leaving the mosques after the prayers.
