Srinagar, Jun 10 (IANS): Senior hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was Friday placed under house arrest in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital, police said.
Geelani has been restrained from moving out of his house in order to maintain law and order in the city, a police officer said.
Sources in Geelani's breakaway Hurriyat group said contingents of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed outside his uptown Hyderpora residence.
"Geelani Sahib was told he won't be allowed to move out today," the source said.
Authorities have been especially imposing restrictions on Geelani's movement on Fridays as the octogenarian separatist leader is scheduled to address post-Friday congregations in Srinagar.
"Violence has followed the inflammatory speeches he makes after Friday prayers. Nobody will be allowed to disturb the peaceful atmosphere prevailing here," the police officer said.
Geelani has given a valley-wide shutdown call Saturday and asked people to assemble at the Eidgah grounds in Old City Srinagar.
