Haveri, Feb 14: A special court for MP and MLA sentenced BJP MLA Nehru Olekar, his two sons and two others to two years imprisonment and Rs 2000 fine for scam in city municipality project that occurred in 2012. They were granted bail later.
A case was filed against eight accused of cheating Rs 5.35 crore by creating fake documents. The court sentenced the accused as it found that fake class one contractor certificate was obtained by the accused.
The guilt of eight people including Nehru Olekar, Manjunath Olekar, Devaraj Olekar, H K Rudrappa, H K Kallappa, Shivakumar P and Chandramohan was proved in the court.
As the verdict was pronounced by the special court for people representatives, the accused applied for bail. The court granted bail to MLA Olekar, his two sons and other officials.
It was accused that Haveri MLA Nehru Olekar favoured his two sons by giving them contract of development work illegally. In the complaint it was accused that the MLA has given the contract for work estimated to cost more than Rs 50 lac.
Based on the complaint, special court had handed over the case to Davanagere Lokayukta police who conducted the inquiry and submitted chargesheet against nine accused.
Special court which conducted the inquiry pronounced eight out of nine as guilty. As one accused died during the inquiry, the case against him is dropped. It is mentioned in the chargesheet that the officials illegally raised bills even before completion of work during the period of 2009 to 2011.
In addition, accusation of atrocity was also heard against family members of Nehru Olekar. It was said that Olekar and his family members had harassed residents of Shidenooru village of Byadagi taluk for grabbing land. The oppressed family members of commoner tried to kill themselves by consuming poison in their land.
